Learning Assisted Faculty (LAF)

It has been a busy term in the LAF faculty, filled with engaging activities and lots of learning. Our students have worked hard and as a result, made some impressive gains in their academic and social development. Below is a snapshot of some of the things that have happened this term.

LAF Markets

LAF Markets is a fan favourite amongst our students. This project based learning style of teaching provides students the opportunity to participate in a mock economy. In this activity, students plan and develop their own business and using fake currency, sell a product to other students and staff. Throughout this activity, students develop their problem solving, planning and communication skills. They also gain an insight into the various duties and considerations required of a shop keeper. In this year’s LAF Markets, we had a number of different successful shops such as a taco shop, a dodge ball shop, a cupcake shop and many others. Students are excited for next year’s LAF Markets and some are already coming up with some creative ideas.

Bstreetsmart

Bstreetsmart is the inspiring initiative of the Trauma Service at Westmead Hospital. Westmead’s Trauma Service is constantly reminded through their hands on work that young people aged between 15–30 are disproportionally represented in road trauma. As a result they have a strong commitment to road safety education and engage students in a realistic crash simulation. 44 students from Evans High School attended this program with 3 students from LAF also in attendance.

Farewell to our Year 12s

It is the end of an era as Evans High School farewells Aarzabi and Lalith. Both students started here in year 7 and have become well known and loved throughout the school. Lalith has been an outstanding role model for our students and Aarzabi has made some incredible improvements during her time at Evans. Both students will be sorely missed and we wish them the best for the future.

Technological and Applied Studies (TAS)

Food Technology

In Food Technology this term, Year 9 have studied about the influences of different cuisines on Food in Australia and in groups, they have researched and created delicious cultural dishes as a part of their Food in Australia Assessment Task. Year 10 have studied the Food for Special Occasions unit this term. As a part of their Assessment Task, students had to plan a child’s birthday party and create a cake that matched their chosen theme. They all did a marvellous job and created fantastic cakes!

Personal Development Health Physical Education (PDHPE)

They have researched statistics related to the health of Australians, viewed health promotion campaigns and have linked these to the Ottawa Charter, participated in fitness testing and have engaged in practical lessons related to biomechanics. Students also attended a First Aid course, where they further developed upon and applied the theoretical knowledge obtained during lessons, in order to attain their First Aid qualification. Students were assessed through the completion of research tasks, as well as the Yearly Examination. They will begin to study the HSC content in Term 4, which will build upon the knowledge they gained during the Preliminary course.

Students were assessed through a speech, where they were able to conduct surveys, interviews and observations to research a leader in the community, as well as through the research of statistics related to families and the completion of the Yearly Examination. Next term, students will begin the HSC course, where they will utilise the research skills they have developed to complete their Independent Research Project.

Year 10 BStreetSmart Excursion

In Week 8, 60 students from Year 10, LAF and IEC attended the BStreetSmart excursion at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park. The aim of this excursion was for students to develop and build upon the necessary knowledge and skills they require to be safe road users and avoid road accidents. Students watched a demonstration of a crash scenario, listened to guest speakers tell their stories of past road accidents that have affected them and their families and also viewed a demonstration of braking distances. In the lunch break, there was an opportunity for students to speak with various companies and services about road related issues, such as the Police, the RMS and driving instructors and engage in a range of interactive activities. Upon discussion with students, they felt they learned more about road safety issues and the consequences of their decisions on the road, which will change their road use behaviours in the future. We look forward to attending this event next year!

Year 7 and 8 Swim School

In Term 4, Year 7 and 8 will be taking part in our annual Swim School program. Year 8 will be attending during Week 6 and Year 7 will attend the program during Week 7. This is an exciting and essential program that students must attend to develop upon the skills they already have in swimming and lifesaving. Students will be split into groups to suit their ability level, which will ensure the program caters for all students regardless of whether they are non-swimmers or zone level champions! The cost of this program is $55.00, which covers the students’ entry fees into the pool and the cost of the bus each day. Students will receive their permission note in the near future.

Mathematics

Year 7 put their knowledge of 3D shapes, area and volume to the test by creating these amazing African Animals - all on their own. They had to calculate all the surface areas of each shape, the volumes of each shape, as well as the percentages of a shape compared to total volume of the body. They did an amazing job.
