Intensive English Centre (IEC)

IEC News

It’s been another busy term in the IEC. We were very happy to see parents and carers coming to our school to Meet The Teacher afternoon during Week Four. Our Student Leaders did an excellent job of showing parents around and representing our school during this event.

The Pacific Waves Program has been continuing, along with the ABCN interACT program where students are working with professional mentors in the CBD. On 6 September, students from 43B went to interview residents of St Dominic’s Home for the Elderly which is directly across the road from Evans High School.  The students were doing a Field Study in line with their Geography course, Place & Liveability.  They heard stories of life in Malta and life now.  The elderly people were very pleased to be able to talk to such polite and respectful students.

All throughout the term, our classrooms have seen students engaged in rich and varied learning activities to support them in learning English and transitioning to mainstream High School. We are currently preparing for our Leavers’ Assembly which will take place in Week Ten. At this assembly students, we will say good bye and celebrate the achievements of students who are transitioning to High School.

ABCN InterAc

A group of students from the IEC had the unique opportunity to attend and successfully complete the ABCN InterAct program at the CSR office in North Ryde. Over the five sessions this term, our students got to meet, work with and be mentored by some of their very own employees. Each session was aimed to support students in gaining the cultural and vocational literacy they need to participate in Australian life.  As engaging as it was, it also challenged students to develop their skills in communication, building relationships, setting goals, identifying strengths and learning to confidently sustain adult conversations in English in a job interview. It was an incredible experience that gave our students a perspective out of school.
