Year 9 Science: Taste testing

Written by: Pip Crawford and Amelia Strait – 9C

On the last day of term 1, our class had a great laugh in science. We were using two of our senses (smell and taste) to try and guess 13 different foods from powders to solids. We were blind folded and had the option of smelling the item or taking a chance to eat it. The results were hilarious!

We all took turns smelling and tasting the food items. Some of the food items such as the coffee beans had a very distinct smell and not many students ate them. However, some items such as the chilli powder made it difficult to distinguish what it was without tasting it (and sent everyone running for water!!!).

We had heaps of fun completing this task, and we learnt a lot about how sight can really effect whether we eat something or not. If we know we don’t like something, such as oranges, we won’t eat it. However, if we can’t see the food, we might eat it. This experiment showed how hard it would be to be blind, always relying on touch, smell and taste.

From all of 9C science, we would like to thank Miss Gizycki for providing us with this fun and rewarding experience.
