5-6S Students were asked to share their thoughts and opinions about the NPS Swimming Program.

Swimming is fun but there’s a lot of things you need to learn, such as how to swim and to do tricks like underwater flips and dives, backstroke, and butterfly. Then there is swimming from one end to the other, taking one breath halfway - and freestyle. You also learn how to be careful so you don’t slip and crack your head open, and you have to be careful about your skin. The sun’s rays can burn it, that is why you have to have sun screen on to protect your skin from burning. That is why swimming is fun but can be risky too.

Why it is a good idea to have the N.P.S Swimming Program

It is a great idea to have the swimming program because it teaches students to save people’s lives – and their own. It is a good skill to have so you can safely go to the river and beaches. You get to learn a number of strokes like freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke and backstroke.

  • You get into groups quickly and calmly
  • Respond clearly when the teacher is calling everyone’s names
  • Move to your area in an orderly fashion
  • Be a good role model by listening to the teacher, and make sure you ignore others who might be distracting.
  • Don’t muck around while the teacher is speaking
  • Help anyone who needs help understanding the rules.

Why do we have a Swimming Program?

The main reason why we should have a swimming program is because it helps you when you are in water, and when you’re in danger in the water. It also teaches you what to do when someone else is in trouble in the water. At a lake or a river, or in your backyard pool, you might save a life.

Swimming… what to do in a dangerous situation

How to stay safe in the water -

This is what to do in a dangerous situation. If you’re in the ocean and you don’t know what to do, you need to start treading water; this is how you do it…

To tread water, keep your body vertical in the water and your head up above the surface. Then, move your arms back and forth horizontally to keep your upper body afloat. At the same time, move your legs around in a circular motion, keeping your feet stiff.

You can also do survival backstroke.  You need to lie on your back then you need to bend you knees and kick your legs slowly. Your arms should bend at the elbows and gently move parallel to the surface of the water.

That’s all you need to do in a very bad situation. The most important thing is to stay calm - help will be on its way.

All primary aged students should do a swimming program!

We think it should be compulsory for all primary aged students in all schools to participate in a swimming program. Here are the reasons why:

  • The instructors teach you how to survive in the water
  • You need to learn how to stay safe because anything could happen around water
  • You need to learn swimming strokes early because later on in life you probably won’t be able to get the hang of it.
  • It’s easier to learn when you are younger because you have prior knowledge from watching older people swim
