We have had a great few weeks of remote learning 2.0 and we thank our amazing parents and students for bringing such enthusiasm and understanding. In the junior area we have been focusing on a picture story book each week and linking all our learning activities to our book of the week. Last week we had fun unpacking and reading the story book, ‘Where is the Green Sheep’ written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Judy Horacek. This picture story book has wonderful and bright illustrations of happy sheep doing interesting things such as sliding down slides, enjoying bubble baths, fixing cars and riding on trains. Although we are not in our ‘classroom’ being at home has allowed our students to be exposed to mathematical ideas in real life. These conversations and experiences provide rich and meaningful links to mathematical ideas. In numeracy the prep one students had fun finding the Green Sheep which had been hidden around Mrs Foley’s house. The students were asked to use the language of position to describe where the green sheep was hiding. They then had a go at hiding one of their own toys around their house and used location words to describe where their toy was. Students in the early years of school come with diverse knowledge and experiences of the world. It is important that we ask students to think about characters in stories and help them make connections. This process allows students to connect their learning to their own experiences, culture and family life. For reading the students were asked to identify their favourite character in the story and explain why it was their favourite character. Vy said ‘My favourite sheep is the bed sheep because a sheep is reading a book and I like to read books,’ James.G said ‘My favourite is the bike sheep because I ride my bike’, Jennifer said ‘My favourite sheep is the green sheep because it is my favourite colour.’

Although many things around us have changed at the moment it is important that we find humour.  Judy Horacek the illustrator of ‘Where is the Green Sheep’ has updated some of the characters to match the strange time we now find ourselves in.

Keep smiling everyone :-)
