Working Bee

In just under a week's time, our Buildings and Ground sub-committee will be hosting our first school working bee of 2023.

We aim to have a working bee each term and invite all of our school families to come along. there is always a range of jobs for all different abilities and fitness levels. Working bees are an invaluable way for us to keep our school building and grounds looking great - something that is difficult to do using our government funding alone.

Please put the day in your diary and we will look forward to seeing you there. We will finish the morning with a community sausage sizzle!

Sharing Birthday cakes

As we go through the year, our teachers love celebrating student's birthdays. We try to ensure that children have a great time at school on these special days. Ways that teachers may do this include singing happy birthday, having a special birthday hat or some other creative opportunities!

We do not however allow for students to bring in and share cakes or other food on their birthday. There are a number of reasons for this decision, including;

  • not allowing students to share foods for allergy reasons
  • to ensure that parents are able to understand and manage the foods that their children are eating whilst at school.
  • to manage staff workload by not asking them to cut up and distribute cakes and supervise eating during learning time

We hope that you understand this position.

Pokemon and other trading cards

Currently we are seeing large numbers of students coming to school with their collections of trading cards - most commonly Pokemon and AFL cards.

Whilst we think it is wonderful for students to collect and become enthusiastic about these cards, and believe that there are many educational benefits to doing this, we need to remind families and students that we do not allow swapping and trading of cards at school.

Gotta catch 'em all - just not at school...
Gotta catch 'em all - just not at school...

Sadly, experience has taught us that when trades and swaps do happen, very often this leads to upset and arguments as students are persuaded into swapping their favourite (and often very valuable) card by other children. They often later change their mind and this can lead to regular issues in the yard at break times.

Many children often end up losing some, or all, of their collections - again something that can be very upsetting.

Like with all treasured student possessions, we strongly recommend that they are not brought into school at all. If a student does choose to bring some in however, they will not be allowed to trade and swap during break times.

We hope that you understand this decision and support it at home.

Cyber Safety sessions and resources

Last week students from Years 1- 6 participated in the Inform & Empower digital safety & wellbeing program consisting of a live-streamed incursion focused on healthy and safe digital habits.

All sessions focused on strategies to support your child to navigate the online world including unwanted contact, cyber-bullying, help-seeking strategies, unsafe content and balancing screen time with "green time" (away from screens).

These sessions will be conducted each term and include a variety of age-appropriate content. The tip sheet below outlines what your child learned in the Term 1 session and how you might open up these important conversations with them.
