F-4 Community News

Welcome back to the new school year. We would like to warmly welcome all of our new families to the College. It has been great to see so many families visiting learning spaces and meeting their child’s TA before school to begin to foster positive relationships between the College and home. Community is one of our College’s core values and this was certainly demonstrated at the Welcome Barbeque on Monday afternoon. It was great to see so many families in attendance with smiles on their faces and sausages in hand. We look forward to providing more opportunities throughout the year where we welcome families to share in learning and special celebrations.

The early years of primary school are pivotal in developing key literacy and numeracy skills. Literacy and numeracy help people gain the fundamental skills necessary to achieve success in life from problem-solving skills to developing independence in the modern world. This year through the newsletter, we will share a series of resources to assist families on how to foster literacy and numeracy development at home. These resources will work in conjunction with what is being taught at school. We encourage families to engage in opportunities to develop their child’s literacy and numeracy skills at home throughout the year.

F-2 students will be provided with decodable take-home readers. Foundation students will only begin to take home readers once the Foundation teachers have taught and practised the beginning code for the students to begin to read words in a book. Once Grade 1 and 2 students have completed the decodable reader progression, their take-home readers will be books (often chapter books) borrowed from the library. We encourage all students across F-4 to read at least 4 nights a week at home. For more information on why we use decodable readers and how to support reading at home, please see the below information.

Our new Foundation students have had a great start to the year. Mrs Fleming and Miss Bibby are so proud of the way everyone is settling in and having a go at our learning tasks.

On Tuesday our Foundation students met their Year 6 buddies and had a lovely time getting to know each other.
