Welcome to the 2023 school year!

Starting school, changing classes or changing schools can be a fun and exciting event for children. For some this experience can be very overwhelming and daunting, with worrying thoughts and feelings of anxiousness. As parents and teachers we want to create smooth transitions for each child to settle into their new learning space, creating a sense of belonging to our community.

The 3 points below are just a few ideas of how you can help create a positive school experience for your child:

Routines

Discuss school and home routines with your child. Let them know how they will be getting to and from school, helping to alleviate the uncertainty of travel. When children are left knowing what is ahead of them, they are likely to be more confident throughout the day and display increased self confidence and independence at the end of the day.

Communication

Encourage discussions about feelings and emotions with your child. Provide them opportunities to express their concerns, joys and other feelings about school.

Partnerships

Contact your child's teacher/s to find out what the learning focus is at the time to prompt conversations about what they are doing in class. The conversations may help you build a better understanding about how your child is adjusting to school and their new learning environment. You can organise a regular chat with the teacher via emails, phone calls and/or in-person meetings.

Some children will experience separation difficulties when leaving their parents for the school day. To assist with the separation each day the above points should be considered and a discussion with the class teacher is recommended. This will allow appropriate strategies to be put in place at home and school to support the social and emotional development of the child.

There are many ways for you to help support your child, the three points above are just a few of which will contribute to kick starting a positive school experience for your child in 2023.

Learning for Life : Commences for 2023 Next Week

This program is part of the Set Up for Success initiative, a free program prompting life-long skills for both young children and their families. We invite children from birth to five years old to attend along with a caregiver. Our experienced Early Years staff develop weekly programs to meet the needs of children within our local community, inspired by Christian values. Each week our Learning for Life sessions will support the holistic development of individual children.

Learning for Life is run out of our Kindergarten House at the College, every Wednesday from 1.30pm to 2.30pm and is accessible from both our Sandy Bay Road and Nelson Road entrances.
