Primary Co-Curricular Report

There have been some tremendous results over the past fortnight, with a number of teams recording good wins. Mr Vo’s B1 tennis team has won back to back fixtures against CBC and St Peter’s whilst the Year 4/5 cricketers also posted back-to-back wins against CBC and Pembroke. The water polo boys continue to do well with the Year 7s showing great potential after a big win against Saints.

There have been some excellent individual efforts in Primary B1 cricket with Declan Dunne scoring 48n/o and taking four wickets in the game against Pedare. Christian Liappis from Year 6 is representing the school in the Drive Tennis team and won his first game at that level. The Kanga cricket boys have started their seasons and are showing terrific enthusiasm whilst the Year 4/5 tennis boys continue to show great improvement and are edging closer and closer to their first wins of the season. There is a lot for our boys to be proud of!

Having said that, over the past fortnight I have spent a significant amount of time dealing with the inappropriate and negative behaviour of a small number of boys. There have been some recent reports by parents, players and staff that Blackfriars boys have been demonstrating:

  • Poor sportsmanship and disrespect towards the opposition
  • Encouraging cheating and dishonesty during games and pressuring teammates to do the wrong thing
  • Inappropriate behaviour from the sidelines during games or players not supporting their teammates as they should
  • Arguing with the umpire’s decision
  • Players leaving games before they have finished to attend club commitments, leaving their team short of players
  • Players not arriving at their games and failing to provide any communication, leaving their team short without notice.

In my position, it is never nice to be told that the boys are not conducting themselves in a respectful and positive manner or that they are letting their friends, team and school down. With so few games remaining, I am expecting that all players will finish the year off with positive and supportive behaviour. It is an expectation that any absences are to be communicated to the coach of the team in advance and that all players remain at the game right until the very end or until players have shaken hands with the opposition. This is the respectful and formal conclusion to most games and all players from both teams should be there for it.

A number of students have been disciplined and missed out on representing the school because of their behaviour. These disciplinary actions shouldn’t be required if everyone plays in the right spirit and honours their commitment.

Congratulations:

Declan Dunne (6V), Nathaniel Forby (6V) and Sam Ellis (Year 7) have been selected in the North Adelaide District SAPSASA Cricket team which will compete in the State Carnival in Week 6 of this term. We wish them all the best for the carnival.

Christian Liappis (6V) was selected in the North Adelaide District SAPSASA Tennis team which will also compete in the State Carnival in Week 6 of the term. We also wish Christian all the best for the carnival.

Physical Education Week – Week 5

Next week is National Physical Education Week. It is an opportunity for students around Australia to celebrate and enjoy the benefits and fun associated with physical activity, sport or dance. A letter will be sent home in the following days outlining some events that the Primary School will be conducting to help celebrate PE Week from Reception – Year 6.

Have a great week!
