Our Year 5 boys enjoy an exciting night walk in Ballarat whilst on camp

Primary Matters

On Friday 3 November, the Year 3 class along with Mrs Petruzzella, Mrs Caroline Wilson, Mrs Jez Bonig, Mrs Alex Nolan and Mrs Allena Bishop went to Monarto Zoo as part of the work they are doing in Science. It was an enjoyable excursion and the boys proudly represented the school with exceptional behaviour.

On Tuesday 7 November, most of the Year 5 students headed off to Ballarat and return Friday 10 November. Most of the students were very excited about heading off to camp, and there were a few who were a little anxious about being away from home for three nights. While they are away they will be going to Sovereign Hill and panning for gold, they will see the original Eureka Flag and get to see the re-enactment of the Eureka Stockade at the evening show of Blood on the Southern Cross. Each day they are away, the teachers will be updating the Ballarat Camp Portal on SEQTA with what they have been doing and will also include some photos taken throughout each day.

During Week 2 and 3 of this term, both Reception teachers (Mrs Bianca Kovacevic and Miss Nicole Schwidder) went to visit all the new Reception students starting in 2018. The teachers find these visits invaluable, when they can meet all the students before they come for their transition visits. It also provides an opportunity for the teachers to meet with the numerous kindy teachers to discuss each child. The first transition visit took place on Friday 3 November. They stayed until 11.00am and were all happy and enjoyed meeting their new friends and teacher. There will be five transition visits altogether and one of these will also be an information session for the parents about their child starting at school.

On Monday 6 November, Harry Boyd-Turner in Year 6 was presented with a Fred Hollows Award. The Award recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in their community. The award acknowledges students who show compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives, just as Fred did.

Since 2012, the Award has recognised more than 750 Primary School students across the ACT, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. In 2017, the Award expanded nationally for the first time with students from all states and territories eligible for nomination. Congratulations to Harry on his recognition of the kindness he shows towards his peers.

On Tuesday 31 October, all the Year 6 students were involved in their Orientation Day for Year 7 in 2018. On the day, the boys were placed into three groups that were based on alphabetical order, and this WILL NOT be the classes for next year. Throughout the day the boys met the new students starting in Year 7, and they also participated in different activities such as Science and PE.  They were all provided with lunch and the day concluded with a Mass in the chapel.
