Uniform Update

The parent, staff and student surveys related to the Student Uniform and Personal Presentation policy review have now closed. Thank you to those who submitted a response. We are now considering the views of the school community as we update the policy.

It is evident from survey responses that some information about the Student Uniform and Personal Presentation policy is unknown or inaccurate in some sections of our community. The following serves to clarify some common misinformation related to the uniform policy in its current form:

  • The Girton shorts and Girton pants are available in a standard fit and a more tailored fit. Typically, the standard fit suits an average male stature and the tailored fit suits an average female stature. Both styles are available to all students.

  • Earrings may currently only be worn (by both male and female students) in the earlobe. Only one earring in each earlobe is permitted.

  • There is no intention to change uniform garments. With the introduction in 2019 of refreshed uniform items, the current policy review is intended only to revisit the policy, not the uniform appearance or manufacture.

We are pleased that the overwhelming majority of our community very strongly believe that the Girton uniform represents a reflection of the standards for which the school community strives. This sentiment is next ranked by a very strong belief that the Girton uniform engenders a sense of belonging.

In all sections of the school community, there is strong support for the continuation of the temporary adjustments that have been made to the policy related to hair and earrings. The policy review committee will take this into account, along with the very large number of negative comments related explicitly to “mullet” haircuts.

There are mixed, but numerous views, on when the Physical Education uniform should be worn in the Senior School, and whether tights should be compulsory with the winter skirt/pinafore.

There is strong support for an approach to the uniform that allows more choice from a gender perspective and a strong desire from parents and staff (but to a lesser degree from students) for uniform standards to remain high.

The updated Student Uniform and Personal Presentation policy will be communicated to parents, students and staff in the coming weeks.
