Sandhurst Senior Cricket

The Girton Senior Boys Cricket team recently competed in the Sandhurst competition. Our first game was against Bendigo Senior, a historically strong opposition. Girton batted first, led by the openers Isaac Willits and Ben Cameron. But an early wicket of Isaac got Senior the start they wanted. Aidan Clemens came in at number 3 and batted with Ben, with some great cricket and shot-making from both, including some big sixes. Girton ended up with 105 off the 20 overs, with a top score from Ben of 40. The game was set, but unfortunately, due to some dropped catches, Senior chased down the runs and beat us.

The second game, we played SEDA, batting first again. The opposition bowled well, but we could not stop a barrage of wickets falling early, once again Ben Cameron was leading the way with 23 followed by Seb Morris with 15. Although lead by Jacob McKenzie who took 2 wickets James Toomey and Seb Morris who got 1 each, SEDA were too strong for Girton and chased the total down.

Thank you to Mr Smalley for coaching and umpiring.

Sandhurst Intermediate Boys

Girton’s Intermediate Cricketers came out on top in the recent Interschool tournament at Strathfieldsaye. After competing gallantly against Catherine McCauley College in the earlier game (and narrowly falling short) the boys rallied and ran out convincing winners in their second match against Eaglehawk Secondary College.

In the CMC match, better performers for Girton were Wasik Ajmain and Will Bowles (2 wickets each), whilst with the bat, Henry Rathjen battled bravely, scoring an unbeaten 20 against a star-studded attack.

In the second match, the boys’ bowling and fielding was on-point from the outset. Ably lead by captain Fraser McKinstry, the Eaglehawk boys were afforded very little room to move and with excellent bowling from all the Girton bowlers, wickets fell regularly. With bat in hand, the Girton boys never looked troubled, with Fraser McKinstry and Henry Rathjen taking the game away from Eaglehawk in the first ten overs. A highlight for Girton was the late order batting of Sampson Tully, who struck a quickfire twenty at better than a run a ball. The Girton boys are commended on their performances on the day. The team gelled beautifully in both matches and their behaviour and application were excellent for the entirety of the day.

Girton vs GVGS

Intermediate Team

On the 5th of march, the Girton Junior Cricket Team, including year sevens, eights, and nines, travelled to Shepparton to play against Goulbourn Valley Grammar School.

Goulbourn Valley grammar won the toss and elected to bat first. Girton put in a great bowling effort restricting Goulbourn Valley to making just over 190 runs.

In the second innings, Girton managed to chase down Goulbourn Valleys score with a few overs remaining. Jimmy Wilkinson played an outstanding inning and made an amazing 142 not out and Will Bowles made 33 not out. Girton ended up beating Goulbourn Valley Grammar by eight wickets.

Thank you to Mr McCarthy for coaching us and Ms speed for organising the day.

Senior Team

On Friday, the Girton Senior boys team played against our rivals Goulburn Valley Grammar in a 35 over match. Girton batted first, unfortunately losing Tom Perrin early. Aidan Clemens and Ben Cameron steadied the innings batting solidly and scoring freely on the fast ground. Until a close call between the wickets resulted in Ben being run out for a very well made 41. Isaac Willits came in at 4 and smashed a quickfire 33* with limited overs left, he battled until the end with Aidan who finished 72*, Girton finished 2/163.

Girton opened the bowling with Asher Butcher and Josh Perry who bowled very economically, Asher bowled 6 over and got 1/19. Tom Perrin entered the attack and bowled quick taking 2/5 off 3.3 and James Toomey stood out taking 2/26 but the best with the ball was Harshil Arora taking 4/18 off 4 overs. This spell got the team over the line and Girton bowled GVGS out for 141.

Thank you to Mr Smalley and Ms Speed for coaching, umpiring, and organising the day.
