5-8 Community News

Dear Families and Caregivers,
It has been a very, very busy fortnight for our students which has seen them complete the following cross-curricular activities:
Cross Country
Badminton
Easter Liturgy
School photos
Bullying. No way! Day
We have continued to teach The Resilience Project and the students have continued to respond exceptionally well with this learning.
In the Years 5/6 and 7/8 areas, some of our learning intentions have engaged students to understand the following concepts:
Begin to understand the concept of Gratitude
Practise expressing Gratitude.
Again, the students have consolidated their understanding of these topics by using their personal journals and through watching a series of videos to help with their thinking around each topic.
This video was provided to the students to help them identify 'Gratitude'

In their student journals, students have answered the following questions:
- What are you grateful for?
- List three things that you are grateful for.
- What are you grateful for today and in this moment?
As we move into our holidays, we wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all the very best holiday. Enjoy the time with your families, spend the time adventuring and most importantly, spend it making memories with the ones that you love!
We look forward to seeing you all back in Term 2. Here are a few healthy reminders that I ask that you share with your children.
- Please continue to ensure your child is in uniform. If they do not have the correct uniform, a note must be provided. If a note isn't provided, they will be placed on the detention list. Jumpers/Jackets - The mornings are starting to get fresh. A reminder that if students are cold, they are most welcome to wear a St Augustine's College jumper.
- Hats - The weather is still warm. It is important that your child has a hat. If they do not, they will be redirected to a safer location in the school.
- TA - Please remind your children about the importance of getting to TA on time. As I am sure you are aware, TA commences at 8:50am and concludes at 9:10am.
- Healthy diet - Plenty of fruit throughout the day and sandwiches packed with all kinds of salad will ensure that our children are remaining healthy. What I notice at recess and lunchtimes is that our students are very active. It's brilliant! Children need vitamins to ensure that they are re-establishing their depleted energy levels.

This week, our students have looked to broaden their vocabulary during challenging situations, in and outside of the space.
The staff and students have explored various scenarios in their classroom space that can help when managing frustrating situations.
Years 5 and 6 Visual Arts
Students in Years 5/6 Visual Arts have been focusing on drawing an insect. They researched an insect and took a screen shot of the chosen insect using their iPad. Students then drew their enlarged insect in grey lead ensuring they included as much detail as possible. Black fine liner and coloured pencil were used to complete the artwork.
Year 5 STEM Challenge
On the 26th of March the Year 5s got to participate in a marshmallow and pasta tower challenge. First we got our group of three or four made by a random group generator. My group had four people. They were me (Olivia), Jimmy, Jack and Arielle. Then we got our tools which were four marshmallows and 25 pieces of pasta. After that we moved to a table and started to plan what our tower would look like on a piece of paper.
A couple of minutes later, Miss Davidson started a timer for 12 minutes to make our tower. My group decided to make a pyramid. We started off by splitting two of our marshmallows into smaller marshmallows. Then we stuck marshmallows on the ends of five pieces of pasta and then one big marshmallow on the top so they would stick together, then we saw another group that had the same idea but they stuck one whole piece of pasta on the top but then it fell off so they started again. Then Jack thought of breaking the pasta in half, then Miss Davidson said we had one minute left so we just put the pasta on top.
“Time's up!” Miss Davidson said. She handed out tape measures so we could all measure how tall our tower was. My team's tower was 57 centimetres tall. Then we all sat on the floor and shared how tall our tower was. I was very happy because my team won! Then we answered some questions about the challenge. Then the bell went and the teachers gave us our prize which was lollies.

Year 7 Chemical Science
This week, Year 7 students have been introduced to chemical science and safety whilst working in the science laboratory. One of the experiments that were conducted this week was a bubble-making experiment. This focussed on the state of matter, gas. Students experimented with different methods to try and create the largest bubble and create multiple bubbles inside each other.
