Around the KLA's - students and their learning

Mathematics

Mr Mark Harris

I often get asked by parents and carers how they can help their child with their learning in Mathematics. Often you feel so out of your depth as it has been years since you studied the concepts covered in school depending on which pathway you end up on in life.

The most important thing is to talk to your child about their learning and remind them it takes effort but it's worth it as Mathematics is everywhere in life.

The following infographic gives some further ideas on how you can help your child's learning in Mathematics.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS: Maths has something for everyone.

PDHPE

MASTERING THE THROWS: Ms Camilla Clydsdale demonstrates shot put technique to her PE class on Tuesday.

This term in PDHPE during practical lessons our focus for Years 7-10 is on Athletics. All classes will complete a 4 week Athletics program in preparation for our College carnival on Friday the 14th of May. Students will experience and develop their knowledge and skills in all field events (shot put, discuss, javelin, long jump, triple jump, high jump) and all track events (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and relays).

Keeping moving on the Oval in PE

The weather has been beautiful over the last couple of weeks and our College PE classes have taken full advantage.

Science

Mr Daniel Fittler / Mrs Lilly Moar

In Science students have started new topics for this term. Those topics are as follows;

  • Year 7 - “Toys” (forces)
  • Year 8 - “Scissors, Paper, Rock” (materials and chemistry concepts)
  • Year 9 - “Chemical Reactions”
  • Year 10 - “Obeying the Laws” (waves and laws of motion)

Creating smoke: Year 8 working on chemical reactions in Science this week.

As always, we are excited to challenge the understanding of our students in these areas and wait with great anticipation to see the solutions that they develop as the needs arise.

This week the students in year 12 Physics along with the students in Year 12 Hospitality travelled to the Gold Coast to complete content relevant to their course.

The Physics students went to Dreamworld to measure G-forces on rides and use this to calculate energy and maximum velocity in those rides (see our College Facebook Page for detailed ride descriptions from the students. The students (and teachers!) had a good time and learnt a lot about ride science and were then able toget a feel for the forces that they were calculating. The most amazing thing about this experience is how students rally around the person with the greatest fears, to help them overcome their challenges.

Agriculture

It has been a busy time at the Agricultural Farm with all of the events that occur running a farm as well as extra activities Mrs Janet Price holds during break time.  Her students have been involved in the Yard Dog Trials this week at the Armidale Show Ground which has proved a great experience.

One of the lunch time activities has been practice at leading cattle.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: Leading Cattle during Break B this week.

Hospitality

Mrs Anne Healey and her Hospitality students returned from their excursion to the Royal Pines Resort on Wednesday night. During their time at the Gold Coast they gained valuable work experience in a variety of areas of the Hospitality Industry. Of course, they managed to grab a couple of rides at Dreamworld, where fellow Year 12 students were studying the laws of Physics.
