VCAL Primary Project

Year 12 VCAL students visit Merri Creek Primary School

Merri Creek Primary Project: VCAL Literacy

For Term 2 and Term 3, the Year 12 VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) students have been visiting Merri Creek Primary School and assisting a Year 1/2 class to develop skills across the curriculum. The main activities have been focused on developing spelling; literacy; number sequencing; brain development games; and sports/PE activities.

For literacy, the Year 12 VCAL students had to teach the 1/2 class how to master a range of words off a word list. The 1/2 class had to sound out the letters and write them in the correct order.

For numeracy, the VCAL students assisted the students to complete number order games. The Merri Creek Primary students enjoyed the variety of the Maths games and being able to select and choose their learning.

In Term 3, the VCAL students have been required to plan and deliver a sports activity to teach to the Merri Creek Primary students. The VCAL class have focused on developing their oracy skills and delivering spoken information in a clear and relevant manner.

The students planned a game of dodge ball and ran a soccer skills session. The Primary students all said how fun the dodge ball game was. Whilst the soccer skills session allowed the students to show off new dribbling skills in a game of number soccer.

The students are currently reflecting on their delivery of the sports lesson and rewriting them to be even more effective.

Clancy a VCAL student states: "It's been nice to see the Primary students having fun, and they clearly enjoy us coming here."

"It's been enjoyable meeting all the kids and getting to know them and seeing them excited to see us!" said Eva, also from the VCAL class.
