Year 7 and 8 girls at the divisional Football competition

Regional Netball

Congratulations to all of our Netball teams who have competed in the NMR Regional Netball Finals at Macleod.

Intermediate Girls

First up was Intermediate Girls on Tuesday July 24. The girls had some very tough matches against Melbourne Girls and St Helena and were defeated.  Our final match against Mt Ridley was a nail biter. They girls fought hard to come away with the win by 1 point. Well done girls. A real team effort all day.

VCE Girls

On Wednesday July 25 it was our VCE Girls turn to compete at this level. They hit the ground running in a fast paced match against the Sporting School SEDA.  Our girls lost this match, but were warmed up and ready to take on Eltham in their second and last match for the day. We defeated Eltham in a tight game, but it wasn’t enough to get us through to the finals. The girls played well together and should be proud of their efforts.

Year 7 Boys

Our Year 7 boys netball team displayed excellent cohesion and sportsmanship throughout their regional finals competition. They managed to make it through to the grand final where they went down in a very highly skilled match. Congratulations to all involved on your efforts throughout the day itself and during the training processes in the lead up. Special thank you to Lucinda Grace-Perry and Luke Williams for voluntarily coaching the boys and delivering a tremendous job in doing so!

Intermediate Boys

I couldn’t be prouder of the Yr 9/10 boys netball team! Not because they were undefeated at Regionals and have progressed through to the State Finals, but because they were such fantastic role models for the junior boys team and outstanding ambassadors for Northcote High School. Each student in our squad trained and played with passion and enthusiasm. They looked formidable from the start and received glowing compliments from officials and coaches of opposing teams.

The boys really lifted their game when playing stronger teams & constantly thrive to improve their knowledge of the nitty gritty rules and tactics in netball. Only two students in the team play netball outside of school and the boys did such a wonderful job transferring their invasion game skills to the netball court. Special mention to Luke Williams in his role as captain, an exemplary leader both on and off the court in the way he communicates and interacts with players, officials and staff. As their coach, competing at Regionals last week is up there as one of my favourite days of the year so far. The boys are full of energy and constantly make me laugh. Well done, super effort team!

The team consisted of Douglas Buckeridge, Richen Dorjee, Max Johnstone, Jame Korsopoulos, Connor Lester, Lachlan McKain, Zac Simpson and Luke Williams, the boys now move to the State Final which is to be played on September 3 at Waverley Netball Centre.

Year 7/8 Junior Girls Football

On a cold and dreary Monday the Year 7 and 8 girls played against three other schools at the divisional competition at McDonnell Reserve. First up was Eltham High, which Northcote won convincingly at 10-1. The NHS girls also won their final match against Sacred Heart with a very impressive 38-0. Unfortunately after the middle game against Melbourne Girls College sat equal at one goal all for most of play, the final two minutes saw two scoring opportunities seized by MGC for a final score of 6-18 against Northcote. Unfortunately this means Northcote’s junior girls footy campaign is over for 2018, with MGC going through from our pool. The girls played incredibly well, with exceptional depth to the team’s talent. A special mention is well deserved for captain and ruck Beatrice Macdonald, as well as two key speedy midfielders, Molly McErlain and Rylie Wilcox. Well done to a great effort by all.

Badminton

Well done to our VCE Girls Badminton team who competed in the NMR Regional Finals on Tuesday 31 of July. The girls had some very competitive matches, but just couldn’t come away with a win on the day.

Senior Boys win Northern Region Table Tennis

Tim Butler, Shoan Korematsu, James Marinos, Ionnis Nisiotis and Andrew Thai were the winning team on Thursday 2nd August.

Six teams competed split into two pools of three.

In our first round we defeated University High, taking three of the singles and one of the doubles to win four rubbers to two.

In the second round we won every rubber against St Helena Secondary College. We then played the winner of the other pool, Lalor Secondary College.

In the singles we won three rubbers and Lalor won one.  Lalor then one the first doubles.  That left us at 3 to 2 – we had to win the last doubles to prevent a draw.

Our number one and two players, Tim and Shoan, came through for us and we won four rubbers to two.

The boys now compete in the state finals on Wed 15th August. Let’s hope they can emulate the Year 8 boys who were state champions last year.

Year 9/10 Regional Soccer

At this level 8 teams play off in 2 sections of 4. Our boys team drew their first match 2-2 with University HS and then won their next 2 matches. Unfortunately, they finished second in their section to University HS on goal difference. University then played off in the final.

The girls led by State player Rosie Thyer started in the same vein drawing 1-1 with Melbourne Girls. After defeating Craigieburn 2-0 and Montmorency 10-0 we had to wait for Melbourne Girls to play Montmorency. They needed to win by 10 goals to beat us on goal difference. Montmorency could have given up but played a solid game against Melbourne Girls to only lose 3-1. This put us into the final where we defeated Lalor 2-0. Our Girls showed great character and were so determined and focussed especially in the final match.

Both teams deserve credit for their behaviour both on and off the field and their love of sport. Our boys now focus on 2019 with many of our players being in Year 9. Our Intermediate girls – second in State in 2017, now progress to the best 8 teams in Victoria in the State finals at DISC on Monday 3rd September.

We wish them all good luck. Can they go one better?
