Athletics Day Carnival

By Erica Dixon-Mason

On Thursday 12th of May, we had our annual Athletics Carnival held at Springvale Athletics Track. After being postponed from the 6th of May due to Melbourne’s unpredictable weather, everyone was awaiting whether or not we would be lucky a second time. From Ms Cannon’s announcement on Wednesday which let everyone know that the day would be occurring, the excitement was building up from that afternoon! Although the weather had forecast cloudy skies and a chance of showers, we still had high hopes that everything would be ok!

As students started to arrive at the track in their House colours with smiles on their faces we were excited about what the day would bring! As the initial events for each year level were announced, students were hurrying off in every direction to try their best in their particular event, whether it was discus, triple jump or even the 1500m!

Throughout the day, numerous students were helping out whether it was assisting teachers with events or filling empty spots, the team spirit was everywhere! With a peak of sunshine every so often and little rain, I knew it would be a good day! However, the day became even better when I saw that Romero had maintained their lead, although, Brigid was creeping up. As the relays were beginning, we knew it would be a close call in the end!

Whilst, the points were being calculated for the announcement of the 2022 House Champions, the annual staff vs student relay had everyone on the edge of their seats! Up against two very strong staff teams, the Year 12’s knew it would be tough but we had faith that we could still secure the win! As the baton moved steadily across the track, the students held the lead over the teachers! As everyone crossed the finish line, it was the Yr 12 students that had won against the teachers, this year!

As it was time for the final announcement, the anticipation was growing by the second. As each house was called, with Chisholm in fourth and Mackillop in third, this meant it was down to Brigid and Romero in second and first place with a 22 point difference. With Brigid, placing second, Romero knew they had taken the win as back-to-back champions!

Well done to all the girls who participated and a massive thank you to all the teachers who helped organise the day to make it the best, we could not have done it without you all!

Another thank you to my Romero House Captains, Mitsuki Otaka (Year 11), Jesele Baxter (Year 10), Nikki Phaengsavath (Year 9), Kathleen Ma (Year 8), Cyrella Bedra and Marilyn Go (Year 7). Your contribution to team lists and continuous support throughout the day was very appreciated and we would not have been able to do it without you!

Thank you so much to all staff for their assistance with the House Athletics Carnival last Thursday! It's a big day for everyone involved but we couldn't possibly run the day without the help of all staff. Walking around I could see events being run so smoothly- this was because staff were so good at organising students in their events. Thank you very much staff!

A special mention to our PE team who were amazing at leading the rest of the staff in their areas for the day. A huge thank you goes to Troy Brodie (chief judge), Emma Sadler (recorder), Emma Neville (chief marshal), Jo Camilleri (starter), Emily Maguire (chief marshal) and Gabby Camp who did a lot of the behind the scenes work in the lead up to the day. I would also like to thank Mark Vickey who was instrumental in organising the recording of results for the day. Also a thank you to the maintenance staff for packing the little bus for us in the lead up to the day. A thank you also to Lucy Collins for organising tea and coffee for the staff.

Thank you to my student helpers for the day- my PE classes Year 7 St. Rose and Year 8 St. Patrick. The day would not have been possible without your assistance girls so thank you very much for all your efforts. Especially the students that completed multiple jobs on the day- amazing work girls!

I also wanted to thank all of my house leaders for their involvement in the organisation and running of the day. I wanted to especially thank my year 12 leaders - picking their teams and filling events is a big job and all this hard work does not go unnoticed. Thank you Year 12 leaders: Erica Dixon-Mason, Angelica Ngyuen, Tayla Cornell and Isabella Diaco.   Lastly congratulations to all the students involved in the day. We could really feel the House spirit down on the track! We loved hearing you cheer on your friends and fellow House peers.
