Mental Health & Wellbeing Report

“Children are great imitators, so give them something great to imitate.”

Dear Parents/Carers/Families,

Welcome to Term 2. This week I want to talk about School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) and what this currently looks like at our school. We have been on the SWPBS journey for a few years now, but as with everything else over the past 2 years our implementation has been impacted by COVID. As a school we endeavour to continue this journey and work towards our accreditation as a SWPBS School.

What is SWPBS?

PURPOSE & RATIONALEPBS is a broad range of systematic and individualised strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behaviour.OSEP Center on PBIS

The purpose of SWPBS is to establish a positive school climate in which appropriate behaviour and expectations are the norm for all students. It provides school communities with an effective evidence-based approach to creating positive and engaging school environments. SWPBS assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people. It focuses on data and inquiry to drive continuous improvement in the school’s behaviour management processes and policies.

When SWPBS is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:

  • increased respectful and positive behaviour
  • increased time focused on instruction
  • improved social-emotional wellbeing
  • positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
  • increased adoption of evidence-based instructional practices
  • a predictable learning environment with improved perceptions of safety and increased attendance.

These are some things we have achieved so far:

  • Links to AIP
  • School team established
  • Training for school improvement team members and team leaders
  • Presentations and Professional Development for staff
  • Action Plan developed (the action plan is evolving and being modified as the group grows in their understanding of the approach)
  • Behaviour Expectation Matrix developed
  • Acknowledgement and reward system in place
  • Integrating SWPBS into existing school structures and procedures
  • Teaching of behaviour expectations

Our Acknowledgement and Reward System

You may have noticed your children bringing home some rewards that they use their Dojo points to purchase from the Dojo Shop. ClassDojo is used in all classrooms and students receive points for following the school’s behaviour expectations. In the yard, staff are always on the look out for students displaying positive behaviour. Students are acknowledged with a raffle ticket that goes into the draw to win our school pet Lizzie for the following week. Students also receive 5 extra Dojo Points for each raffle ticket they get. An important aspect of SWPBS is the use of common language throughout the school and specific feedback. This positive behaviour language is explicitly taught and means students can articulate the positive behaviour for which they were acknowledged.

I hope this has been helpful and has explained a little bit more about School Wide Positive Behaviour Support.

Kind Regards,

Vanessa Moore
