National Walk Safely to School Day

National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is on Friday the 20th May 2022. Now in its 23rd year, the annual campaign encourages all primary school children, their parents and carers to walk safely and regularly to school. This event seeks to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment.

The Objectives of National Walk Safely to School Day

  • To encourage parents and carer to walk regularly with their children, all or part of the way to school
  • To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits
  • To help children develop vital road crossing skills to ensure children up to the age of 10 years old hold an adults hand when crossing the road
  • To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion, especially around schools
  • To reduce the level of air pollution create by motor vehicles
  • To promote the use of public transport

How to Participate

Walk to school with a parent or carer. If you can’t walk all the way, combine a walk with public transport or leave your car a good distance from the school and walk the rest of the way. To find out more information, you can visit the website walk.com.au.

To celebrate Education Week, 

Somerville Primary School will be inviting Grandparents and Special Friends to visit our wonderful school on the afternoon of Thursday 26th May. The afternoon will begin from 2:30pm until 3:15pm, Grandparents and Special Friends are encouraged to come into our classrooms and play some Maths games with our students. Our Student Leaders will greet visitors at the entrances to the school.
