Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon boat festival

Dragon boat festival also known as the double fifth festival is a traditional Chinese festival that falls on the 5 of the 5th month of the lunar calendar(五月初五). Its origin was to commemorate the poet Qu Yuan.

This festival is one of the three major celebrated festivals in China, together with Chinese New Year and the Moon Festival. During the day of the Dragon Boat festival, there are various beliefs and traditions that the Chinese people do, such as racing dragon boats, eating gooey but delicious rice stuffed in a bamboo pocket (Zong zi / Zhong zi 粽子).

At night it’s a happy and messy feast of 粽子 and other sorts of delicious foods depending on who eats it. On Friday 3rd of June 2022 we celebrated the dragon boat festival. Somewhere around Box Hill there’s gonna be lots of Chinese people at these stands watching lion performers and eating foods.
