Surfside Swimming and School Sport Victoria Update - Team Vic

2022 Bellarine Division Swimming Championships Tuesday 22nd March, 2022

Kardinia Aquatic Centre, South Geelong

We will be offering our students aged 9 - 13 who swim regularly (preferably at a squad level or high level of swimming competence and able to competition dive) to nominate for the Surfside PS swimming team in 2022.  This is a Division stage swimming competition, against other students from schools in the Bellarine Division.  We will provide families with an online entry form to nominate their child with recorded times over 50m. The students will need to nominate their preferred event/s (students can enter a maximum of two individual events, one age group relay and one Medley relay - relays will be reliant on student numbers). The events that are available are 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breastroke , 50m butterfly and relays. Swim teams usually consist of smaller numbers so it will be the responsibility of parents or carers to arrange travel to and from the venue on the competition day. Entries will close Friday 18th February. We will then complete a trial at BASC to confirm entry times and seedings for the championships on Friday 25th February.

If you would like to enter your child please CLICK HERE to complete the entry form.

School Sport Victoria Team Vic Teams and Trials

School Sport Victoria enters teams in School Sport Australian competitions. Victorian Primary school students participate in are the 12 years and under events. As the ages of students in the different Year levels vary across Australia, it is an age-based competition, not a Primary Sector competition.

Information on the selection process for students wishing to become a member of any Victorian 12 and under sports team can be found on the School Sport Victoria (SSV) website at https://www.ssv.vic.edu.au/team-vic

  • All SSV teams compete under the Team Vic banner.
  • It is hoped that Victorian teams will get to participate in 15 different sports this year.
  • Students cannot turn 13 before 31/12/2022.
  • For all sports that are not presently open for registrations, parents can indicate their interest in their child trying out for the Team Vic now. If they do this, they will be informed when registrations open.

PARENT/GUARDIAN INFORMATION

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to accurately complete the nomination form, make the payment, transport the student to the trial/s and cover all of the costs.

The school’s involvement is limited to promoting the opportunities and endorsing the nomination of students.

Schools are not compelled to endorse the nomination if the Principal or Sports Coordinator does not believe the student is ‘elite’ in their sport.

In team sports, the school should only endorse the nomination if the student consistently displays ‘well above average’ team and sport-specific skills for 12 years old students. The process is to determine the best from across Victoria, not provide students with an opportunity to have an experience participating with high achieving students in their chosen sport. The student will have done this by dominating school games, playing in league representative teams and/or finishing in the top 2-3 in league awards. If there are no league awards, the student would be expected to be winning one of the main club awards presented at the end of the season.

For all sports, unless an 11-year-old child has a proven record at the elite (State) level, it is advised that he/she is not endorsed by the school to participate in the 2022 trial. Rather, they should be encouraged to register for the 2023 trial.

When nominating their child/ren, parents/guardians are agreeing to support their child/ren to attend every stage the student is selected to attend. If a student cannot attend the trial for any reason, they will not be given the opportunity to attend an alternative trial. For the child to possibly have the opportunity to trial at the level after the trial they were unable to attend, the reason must be within those listed in the SSV Invitation Policy and the parents/school be able to provide evidence that their child has demonstrated that they are of a standard that is, at the least, equal to the students who had been selected to participate at next level. The Invitation Policy can be found on the SSV website at https://www.ssv.vic.edu.au/Downloads%20Library/Interstate%20Teams%20(TeamVic)%20Policy.pdf

THE SELECTION PROCESS

There has been a major change to the process that has been followed in recent years. The latest information on the selection process can be found on the SSV website.

As a general guideline, the stages are

  1. Parent nominates their child/ren using SSV’s online nomination forms.
  2. Parents receive information re the date and venue of the first trial from the SSV Head Office.
  3. Parents take the nomination form to the school for the Principal or Sports Coordinator to sign. To sign the form, he/she must be of the opinion that the student’s ability in the sport is ‘well above’ that of an average 12-year-old student.
  4. The student attends the Division trial. NOTE: The Western Metropolitan Region conducts the trials for the eight Divisions at a single event. The details are below.
  5. Selected students advance to the ‘Western Victoria’ trial.
  6. Selected students advance to the ‘State’ trial.

The decision as to who advances to the next stage will be made by people who have had a lot of experience working in the sport with late primary/early secondary aged children. Most, if not all, of the selectors, have worked with ‘elite’ junior squads.

NOTES ON THE DIVISION TRIALS:

  1. It is not possible for every child to be given personalised feedback as to why they weren’t chosen to participate in the next stage. However, they may receive some advice and/or coaching while the activities are being conducted.
  2. Parents and students are reminded that the decision as to whether or not the child participates in the next session or level is made on the basis of what the selectors see on the day. We understand that it is likely that there will be some disappointed students and parents after each session. If this occurs, please do not take out your disappointment on the selectors and remember that there are many people who were not chosen to play in representative teams at the junior level but competed at the ‘world elite’ level in later years.
