Year 8 Open Water Morning

On Tuesday 8 February, the Year 8 students and team had an open water day at Sandridge Beach, Port Melbourne and enjoyed a day learning about safety, and how we can stay safe at the beach and around water. We were all split into groups, and learnt many different safety tools, and had the opportunity to go in the water and do things like bodyboarding and using life jackets. We were led by 2 professionals who helped us with the rules to use in case of an emergency, how to stay safe in water and led us in many fun activities. Each group did 8 activities, 4 on sand and 4 in the water, so we were able to participate in a range of different things. Some of the activities that we did on the sand ranged from flags, to cricket, each with its own set of rules. Flags was a fun activity and the aim was to pick up a flag while lying down before someone else takes it. This would have to be a highlight of the day, and was very enjoyable. We also learnt valuable life lessons on how to help ourselves and others in a dangerous situation. The equipment we used assisted us in saving our friends as we learnt to place a lifejacket on them. We also learnt how to use body boards and how to move around on them. Overall the Open water day was an exciting and fun day that helped the Year 8 students have fun and learn some valuable life lessons on how to stay safe.
