Dear St John’s community

It has been another interesting term filled with all the challenges that remote learning brings us. I would like to say thank you to all the teachers who dedicate all their time and energy to helping our students reach their full potential academically and help students remain positive.

In November, some of our Year 9 and Year 10 students will have their written pieces included in the Shared Stories anthology. The theme for this year is Chasing Happiness.

Shared Stories is an annual anthology of creative written and visual art works by primary and secondary students from Catholic schools across Victoria. The Shared Stories anthology commenced in 2006. The concept was originally inspired by a need for educators to explore positive and affirming ways of sharing experiences and ideas across cultural and social student groups throughout Victoria. The anthology forms part of the permanent collection of the State Library of Victoria.

I would like to thank Year 9 and Year 10 students who have contributed their work. I would also like to thank the Year 9 and Year 10 English teachers who have mentored our students for writing these pieces.

Some Year 9 and 10 students will have their written pieces included in the Eagle magazine at the end of the year.

I wish all students and families a peaceful term 4. May we look forward to reuniting as a St John’s community at school very soon

Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Recital Competition

This state-wide competition is usually held every year at the University of Melbourne and is managed by the Dante Alighieri Society of Melbourne. Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321) is regarded as one the world’s most famous poets and is particularly famous for his work ‘The Divine Comedy’. This year St. John’s entered students studying Italian in Years 9 and 10. It was conducted via inaugural Zoom meetings over two weeks and both classes were assessed internally as one group.

Prof. De Francesco and Prof. Sirianni would like to thank students for their effort and delivery of their chosen poems in what was a challenging environment particularly when attempting to recite their poems to a judge in front of a screen with their best pronunciation, expression and fluency. A big thank you also to Prof. Finamore who managed the whole process. Certificates will be issued in due course. There were many wonderful results as can be seen below. Congratulations to our amazing prize winners! Bravissimi!
