Selamat siang!

It has been wonderful coming back to our brilliant MPRPS students after spending two weeks in Indonesia. A huge terima kasih to Bu Wendy Boss, who taught Indonesian and Kitchen Garden for the two weeks I was away.

The Senior School has leapt into learning about folktales - albeit very different stories in 3/4 and 5/6! Students in 3/4 are learning the famous story of Kancil dan Buaya” (The Mousedeer and the Crocodile). This week they made colourful Wayang Kulit (Shadow puppet) crocodiles and mousedeer, inspired by the patterned Wayang Kulit found in Java, Indonesia. These puppets will be used to record the story next week, demonstrating students’ pronunciation. In 5/6, students are learning the story of “Timun Mas” (Golden Cucumber) and have been demonstrating their knowledge of the complex story. Using a variety of summarising techniques, students described the characters, events and debated the meaning of the story and the character’s motivations. In the next few weeks, students will learn and use more of the complex language found in the story.

In Junior School, 1/2 students have been learning about fruits! This week, students created a paper “fruit plate” and were able to describe what fruits they had and how many there were on their plate. Students had fun trying to avoid getting the smelly durian fruit onto their plates - or aimed to get as many as they could, if they were very brave! Next week, students will be learning to describe the sizes of the various fruits and place them in order from biggest to smallest.

Foundation students have been learning about Australian animals! Complimenting their visit to Healesville Sanctuary, students have learnt the borrowed words (words that sound like English) for a number of Australian animals, include “Posum, platipus, kangguru, ekidna" etc. This week, students made a version of “Where is the Green Sheep?” with colourful animals, such as a “kangguru biru” (blue kangaroo) or even a “ekidna hijau” (green echidna). Next week, students will learn how to describe these animals as big or small in Indonesian.

It was great getting back into the kitchen and garden this week! Foundation and 1/2 students had their first kitchen/garden lessons over these first few weeks. In Kitchen, all classes learnt how to make playdough to take back to their room, and were able to learn the process of how we prepare, cook and clean in the kitchen. Students have also had their first garden session, investigating the space and creating a meaningful Acknowledgement of Country, connecting to our garden space. We will soon begin weeding, planting and harvesting any last few veggies leftover from our previous plants (such as our delicious cucumbers that Garden club enjoyed this week!)

If you are up for a drive on Sunday the 21st May, there is an incredible opportunity to be a part of the Indonesian Festival Kebyar in Geelong. More information can be found here https://geelongartscentre.org.au/whats-on/all-events/kebyar-fest/
