“On your marks, get set, go!!” It’s the end of Week 3 and what a week it has been! Friday morning was the annual Cross Country event which students have been preparing for during PE classes all term. Mrs Butterworth continued to be impressed by the number of laps and total kilometres being run each session! It’s always an enjoyable event where our students show perseverance and bravery throughout. The top ten students from each age group will go through and compete in the district competition next week. Well done to everyone for trying your best!
In Reading sessions this week, the Leadership Centre analysed and read through a variety of powerful picture storybooks and identified important and purposeful parts from the text by finding key sentences, phrases, words and images. In Guided Reading groups, students explained different meanings they inferred from the text and how the author purposefully included a range of devices that impacted how we as readers feel and think. It was wonderful listening to the general knowledge and deeper connections students were able to create whilst looking through and analysing the picture storybooks.
In Writing this term our focus has been on different poetry types. One of the more popular styles of poetry is a limerick which students created this week.
Just listen to Mrs Jordanov’s amazing piece that follows the AABBA pattern-
There once was a class called 5/6J,
Who were always keen on having their say,
They are clever and kind but often loud,
Always laughing and making their teacher proud,
It’s students like this that you never want to go away!!
Here is another exceptional example from 5/6J about a special mum.
There once was a wonderful mother,
Who unfortunately gave me a brother,
Then again you go for the Pies
As well as you’re really wise
And I wouldn’t trade you for another.
Keep a look out on SeeSaw for the Poetry Portfolio being uploaded over the next couple of weeks.
In Mathematics this week, students participated in their first ‘Master Class’ session. Master Class is designed to target specific learning intentions that are seen as areas of future focus across the cohort. Based on the student's personal maths goals, they chose a learning intention they would like to learn more about and hopefully feel more like ‘masters’ by the end of that session. Our focus for the next week continues to be exploring addition and subtraction using open-ended tasks that work with whole numbers, fractions and decimals. To continue building on this number knowledge, students are encouraged to practise their addition and subtraction skills through Manga High, completing at least 3 tasks a week, 3 times over.
On Thursday morning, Mount Pleasant Road hosted staff from Doncaster P.S who were coming to observe Wellbeing sessions within classrooms. In the Leadership Centre, we focused our session on Gender and Identity. Students worked together to match keywords relating to gender and identity with definitions before discussing ways Mount Pleasant Road can continue to be an inclusive school with no put-downs that relate to gender, sex and race. Students displayed maturity, bravery and open-mindedness when discussing actions such as calling out others that name call and continue having more discussions relating to this topic in the classroom to build on understanding. I wonder how these conversations can continue at home?
Wishing all the Leadership Centre mothers and special ladies a wonderful Sunday and we hope you are spoilt rotten! See you next week!
