Term 2 Week 2 2023
On Tuesday the Foundation students ventured to Healesville Sanctuary to discover and learn about native Australian animals, as part of their unit 'Mission to the Wild'. The students were all very excited as they boarded the bus in readiness for their adventures and animal spotting. The ‘Spirits of the Sky’ bird show was a highlight for many as this showcased a wide range of birds found only in Australia.
Students also trekked around the sanctuary (with the aid of a map of course) and were eager to learn about and find other animals such as reptiles, kangaroos, leadbeater possums and mountain pygmy possums and echidnas to name just a few. Students participated in activities that saw them matching the right skin to the correct animal and also placing the stages of a life cycle in the correct order. This was a wonderful day and certainly one of the many highlights for our Foundation students.
Thank you to the parents that assisted on the day and to the Foundation teachers for organising such a memorable experience for the students.
Session two of our Parent Phonogram Program was held last night. The session
commenced with a game of ‘Code It’ which is similar to ‘Spot It’ where participants have to say the specific sounds of the code they have matched. This session continued to describe a range of spelling rules such as the ‘fszl gang- where you double the letters f,s,z and l after a single vowel at the end of a one-syllable word (eg. fluff, miss, buzz and will). The elements of handwriting were also demonstrated along with the oral review of codes 31-50. The five jobs of silent final e (SFE) were also discussed and explored further. Thank you to the parents for attending this session and to Miss Chooi and Miss Walker for their continued facilitation of the program. Session Three will be held next Thursday 18th May commencing at 6:30pm.
The Mother’s Day/special person’s stall was held this week with the Kindergarten having their chance to buy on Wednesday and Thursday. The students from Foundation to Year Six have their opportunity to buy a gift today.
We hope that all mums and special persons have a wonderful day on Sunday.
The whole school cross-country will be held today. The Senior students commenced at 9:15am while the junior students will compete in their races at 2:40pm and finish our day off as a fun celebration. The top 10 students in their race will progress to the district level of competition, which will be held on Friday 19th May at Ruffey Lake Park. Thank you to the parents that volunteered their time in assisting the students as they ran around the course. Thank you to Mrs. Butterworth for organising the event.
On Thursday we have a number of teachers from Doncaster Primary visit our school to see our Wellbeing program in action. The teachers were very impressed with what they saw with Foundation students working on catastrophe scales, talking about the size of the problem versus the appropriate reaction and the 1/2’s focused on multiculturalism and respecting the differences in others. The 3/4’s discussed respect and how we can demonstrate towards others, while the 5/6’s focused on gender and identity and how respect and tolerance should be demonstrated. We thank Bu Mundy and Miss Walker for hosting the session for the teachers from Doncaster Primary. At Mount Pleasant Road Primary we place a heavy emphasis on Wellbeing and ensure that it is embedded across multiple areas of the curriculum.
We are hosting an Open Afternoon after assembly for families to visit classrooms to see the work students have been doing so far this term. We look forward to seeing parents and friends at this event.
