Relay For Life
On 19 and 20 of September, 30 Frankston High School students and teachers took part in the Frankston Relay for Life. In total our team raised a tremendous $3,485 which was over three times our goal amount. I would like to give a special mention to William Rear year 7 for raising $640 and Dylan Garrett year 8 for raising $1,545.
What is the Relay for Life? It is a continuous walk to raise funds for the cancer council. It was a fantastic experience spending time with friends to do something we all love. I will surely be attending again next year. A special thank you to all the teachers who attended and especially Miss Edwards for organising it.

When I heard about The Cancer Council Relay for Life I knew I wanted to participate. I wanted to raise money for cancer research and walk in honour of my uncle Drew, as he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer in May. So some of my friends and I signed up to participate and were excited to spend the night camping and walking the track at Ballam Park. My uncle Drew had helped me pledge donations through Facebook and I ended up raising $1,545 and Frankston High School’s total raised was $3,485, which was an amazing effort. On the night we had heaps of fun walking, playing games and staying up late, as well as making new friends. There were bands playing music all through the night, which was a lot of fun to listen to. A candle lighting ceremony began around 7 pm as we remembered the survivors and the people that have lost their battle with cancer. I lit a candle for my uncle Drew. Sunday morning soon appeared and by 11 am a ceremony began to close the relay. I enjoyed the relay so much and will now be involved every year. Thank you to all teachers that came and helped out and a special thanks to Miss Chloe Edwards who stayed all night. RIP to my uncle Drew as he passed away one week after the Relay for Life.
Dylan Garrett – Year 8
In September a group of students and teachers took part in the local Relay for Life. Relay for Life raises funds for Cancer Council Australia. The relay works by kids and adults walking around their local athletics track in relay teams. We started at 4 pm on Saturday and went on through the night finishing at 11 am on Sunday. When I arrived on the Saturday afternoon I met up with my friends Tom and Blake. We had to set up our tents and sleeping bags and make sure we had enough food to keep us going through the night! I was invited to take part in the Survivors and Carers Lap which opens the event. This was a lap where people who have lived through cancer come together and walk a lap together to honour cancer survivors and their carers. It was a very emotional lap and as I was finishing I saw my Mum and Dad taking photos of me. I also met up with an older lady who had survived cancer as well and she talked to me about her experience and asked me about mine and I walked with her for the rest of the lap. We then gathered together for the opening ceremony before the Frankston 2015 Relay for Life started. We walked the first hour together and then we took our turns to relay and rest. Miss Edwards ordered pizza for everyone and we kept ourselves going with snacks and lollies. I managed to miss one of my relay time slots because I was sleeping and no-one woke me up! I was able to stay awake for the rest of the time and walked the final parts of the relay in the morning. It was a great event and the teachers were really supportive and encouraged us all the time. Our original fund-raising goal was $1000 but thanks to everyone’s generosity we smashed that and raised $3,485! Thank you to everyone who supported us.
