Bill Turner Cup Football – 2019

On Tuesday 4 June, McCarthy Catholic College  played Round 3 of the Bill Turner Cup competition against Farrer, under very cold and wet conditions at Farrer Memorial Agricultural College.

Farrer began the game with a burst, but were quickly shut down by a very committed McCarthy mid field. It wasn’t long before McCarthy took command of the game with goals from Brayden Boonstra (2) and William Albertson (1). Brady Painter also scored from a penalty in the box bringing the final score to 4-0. McCarthy played extremely well and must be congratulated for their sportsmanship on and off the field.  It was a fast paced game and the spectators enjoyed every moment. This young team shows a great deal of potential and must be commended for making it this far in the competition.

We look forward to today's game against Armidale Secondary College in Tamworth at the Gipps St fields. A big thank you to Mr Herden for driving the College bus.

The team consisted of: Brayden Boonstra, Kilian Apen, Eion Shepherd, William Albertson, Jack Stanton, Brady Painter, Augustin Monet, Connor Budden, Benjamin O’Connor, Ethan Ross, Achille Monet, Seamus Shepherd, Edward Williams, Frederick Williams, Taine Mackay.

Cochrane Cup League Tag and Under 14 Rugby League

On Thursday 6 June  7/ 8, 9/10 Girls' League Tag and Under 14’s Boys Rugby League participated in the Cochrane Cup in Armidale. It was a successful day with all teams being competitive and representing the College with pride.  All students showed exemplary behaviour. The Year 9/10 Girls' League Tag went through the day undefeated. All schools across the Armidale Diocese were participating. The Year 9/10 girls team is full of Tamworth Taipans representative players and their skills and fitness were tested against willing opposition but they overcame all challengers to win the competition on the day.

The girls' Years 7/ 8 team is a talented group of players. Many of the players had not worked together before and they had a slow start losing to Holy Trinity of Inverell. As combinations developed, the girls continued to improve as a team. They played some great League Tag to win their 3 remaining games.

The under 14’s boys' Rugby League team started one player short yet remarkably won 3 out of their 4 games. They played great football, including strong defence and incisive attack, to record some great victories. After watching the games selectors picked the following students in the Diocese Under 15 trials squad for next year Bradyn Hamilton - S/R, Sebastian Lawler, James Ferguson, Benjamin Chick, Adam Refalo, Lewis Ebzery, Parker Constable and Cameron Smith.

NSW CCC Cross Country

On Friday 14 June five students competed at the NSW CCC Cross Country Championships at Sydney Motor Sport Park Eastern Creek. These students included Georgia Simm, Mackenzie Scott, Layla Wood, Eoin Shepherd and Rai-Lea Hayward. All students ran as hard as their legs would take them. Georgia Simm finished 20th which was a tremendous effort considering she was still overcoming an ankle injury. The other students were very competitive against some highly trained runners from across NSW. A big thank you to the parents who travelled down the night before and supported our students on the day.
