Around The School

Uralla Shire Business Awards.

On Friday 26 July, Uralla Shire hosted their annual business awards. The first of the 5 awards presented on the night was for Junior Service Person. 4 of the 9 nominees were students from Uralla Central School who work in our community. They were Gemma Weguelin (Kentucky General Store), Melanie French (Uralla Pharmacy), Lachlan Barnden (Dales Down Town Meats) and Taylah Whitton (Uralla Preschool). Taylah was first runner-up and Lachlan was second runner-up.

Student Based Apprentices

We currently have 8 school based apprentices. Taylah became a student based apprentice with Uralla Preschool at the start of the year. She is currently completing her Certificate III in Early childhood and care online with TAFE.

School to Work program

We currently have four students participating in the School to Work program.

Lachlan Barnden is currently undertaking the ‘School to Work’ program at Dale’s Down Town Meats. Lachlan undertakes work experience one day per week at the butcher shop. He has developed his skills which include the breaking down of carcasses, food hygiene, manufacturing meat based products and customer service and is hoping to commence his school based apprentice at the end of this year.

Students to Get Dairy Creative in the Kitchen.

During Semester 2 around 60 Uralla Central School students will be in the school’s commercial kitchen, thanks to the Great Ocean Road – Careers Made Here – Cheese Your Own Creation Program and national competition. Cheese Your Own Creation is taught as part of Uralla Central School’s Food Technology ‘Food Wars’ elective class and Technology Mandatory ‘Agrifood’ classes. Hundreds of students from across Australia have registered for the competition.

The program involves students in a uniquely creative way: in teams of two, students design their own imaginative dairy creation to bring to life. The students then develop and make the recipe and submit a photo of the creation to be judged. Twelve lucky recipes will be selected in November for inclusion in the 2020 Great Ocean Road Calendar.

Below are some images of our first attempt of being creative with Great Ocean Road products.

The School of St Jude Tanzania

During the July school holidays, the school's Learning Support Officer, Lorraine Walkinshaw visited The School of St Jude's in Tanzania.  The school was established by Gemma Sisia who grew up in the Armidale area.  Lorraine met with the students from the school and gave them stationary items to use at their school.  They were appreciative and excited about  the items they received, as shown from the beautiful smiles on their faces in the photo below.
