Sports Day
Celebrating their first win since Ms Hay led Vert to victory as a student House Captain back in 2005, Karalta Timana will be determined to retain the Sports Day Shield.
Incorporating indigenous perspectives into our school culture, last year we introduced totem animals native to the Onkapringa District to represent each House colour. We also introduced the Kaurna names of each House colour. How great it would be to see an army of koalas, dolphins, kangaroos and ibis on display in future Sports Days.
Preparations for this year’s Sports Day have been underway since the beginning of term. For parents and families who are new to our school, please be advised that each student has been allocated a house colour. A list with the corresponding details are on display near your child’s classroom.
We welcome back community clubs who continue to promote opportunities to pursue sport outside of school including: Rugby SA, Hackham Hawks, Noarlunga District Junior Soccer Association and Wirreanda Secondary School.
Sports Day will be held on Friday 20 September 2019, Week 9, and will begin at 8:40am and finish at approximately 2:15pm. In the event of bad weather, Sports Day will be postponed to a date to be advised.
As has been the case for the past two years, students will compete in their year levels. Opportunities to earn bonus ‘Village Points’ will be available throughout the day for students who demonstrate school values. Past examples include picking up rubbish and volunteering to represent another colour on top of their own in football, rugby and soccer to balance out uneven numbers.
The Canteen will be open to all visitors throughout the day. Be sure to order lunch orders over the counter or via the school canteen app. A Sausage Sizzle ($2.00), hot potatoes , House Colour biscuits and drinks will be available on the day.
Term 3
Following the conclusion of last terms Dance Extravaganza, students have continued to explore movement through Gymnastics. In recent weeks all junior Primary students have had access to 3 weeks of clinics funded through the Sporting Schools grant we were successful in winning this term. With this grant we have also purchased three balance beams, three cartwheel mats and three carpeted safety mats for students to practice their balancing.
In gymnastics students have been doing a combination of circuits combined with explicit teaching of balancing on beams of different heights, balance and handstands, rolls, cartwheels, hoping and running vault with motor bike landing.
Borrowing Equipment
The majority of the sports equipment we have purchased over the past three years has been possible because of the money we have won via the Sporting Schools grants. Only recently we had a visiting teacher comment on how lucky we were to have so much equipment compared to other schools she has taught PE at in the Southern suburbs.
At present we are reviewing the borrowing shed system which was introduced last year for students to borrow and return equipment at recess and lunch. After a successful first year we have noticed that the equipment is going missing and not being returned. As part of this review we will consider introducing other models such as the process used to recover and replace library books that are not returned.
We ask that you reinforce the importance of looking after and returning the equipment with your child as it belongs to all of us and is for all current and future members of ‘our village’.
