Term 3 - French at Hackham East Primary School

Voici nous à Terme Trois! Here we are in Term Three!

In French this term, students are learning about aspects of French culture, and will continue to learn language as they progress.

With French Day fast approaching on Friday 6 September, there will be some disruptions to classes as we prepare for the day. This year we are hosting a poetry competition for all year levels, and it would be wonderful to see as many entries as possible. Please encourage your children to have a go at creating a poem. Entries are due by Thursday 29 August.

On French Day students will be enjoying cultural activities. Weather permitting, Holly students will be participating in a “Coupe de Football”, a Soccer Cup.

If any parents/carers are interested in volunteering on the day, please see myself or your child’s classroom teacher. Coralie Goodman would also greatly appreciate volunteers in the Canteen.

Castle Unit

Castle Unit students have started the term by looking at La Famille (family) and are exploring how all families are unique and special. From here, students will be making family trees in French, incorporating vocabulary associated with these topics into their work.

This term we have introduced some new games, and Catastrophe is certainly a favourite among the younger students. It has been helping them to learn French language, while also practicing taking turns and showing sportsmanship.

Stillwell Unit

This term Stillwell Unit students have started by learning about France. As the term progresses they will be looking at special places in France, specifically monuments and tourist attractions. This will help them to understand why France is one of the most visited places in the world. Students will be able to get creative in the way they display their projects. In addition to participating in the activities, students will also have the opportunity to help design the learning criteria for their assessment pieces. This will allow them to understand what is required of them in their learning, while also having choice in how they present it.

Holly Unit

Students in the Holly Unit this term have been learning about how French children’s lives compare to their own. We started by looking at their schooling, and are moving now towards learning about what they do outside of school in their free time. It has been interesting to see how the students relate to children who live in different contexts, and funny to see their reactions when learning that French children do not go to school on Wednesdays. There were some interesting debates about whether we should do this as well, and how students would spend that extra time.

As we are already nearing the “tail end” of the year, I am already thinking about Term 4. Students will hopefully be able to get into some French cooking activities, as well as Christmas themed activities as the year wraps up.

I look forward to seeing you on French Day and in the weeks to come at various events at school.
