Student voice is important at St. Peter’s College. It ensures students are treated with the same sort of respect that we expect all members of our College Community to be afforded. This is a basic human right that is enshrined in the first of our Rights, Responsibilities and Regulations of St. Peter’s College: To be treated with dignity and respect.
Student voice is also important because it ensures that the feedback, information and perspective that we get from students enables us to be the best school that we can be. Different perspectives and viewpoints ensure that the implementation of our rules and regulations deliver the best outcomes.
Finally, student voice is important as it builds resilience and responsibility in our students as they develop the confidence to speak up and articulate what is important to them. This is an important life skill and ensures a greater degree of child safety.
Students wishing to be Forum Leaders have already delivered speeches to their peers and a number may have also undergone interviews. The voting system is always a guide for our staff, as we make it clear to the students that appointment to leadership positions is not a popularity contest. All appointments have to be approved by College Leadership.
We thank all our students who have the courage of St. Peter in putting themselves forward for leadership positions and in doing so face judgment from their peers and teachers. This is indeed courageous and living our motto to “Be Not Afraid”.
Cranbourne Campus Master Plan - Arts Precinct & Beyond
The long awaited Arts Precinct should be operational within the next week and staff and students are very excited to see the finished product. It will enable a more open plan approach to learning and teaching in art, ceramics, visual communication and design and multimedia. This should foster greater collaboration and creativity amongst staff and students.
Kolbe House will find a home in this refurbished Florence Williams Building that has had an extended foyer added to it that includes a meeting space for the house, break out spaces for learning and presentation area for students.
Over the next couple of weeks there will be a lot of movement of staff and students as staff move offices and students move Tutor Group rooms and lockers. I hope that disruption will be kept to a minimum as this movement occurs throughout November. It will also include the relocation of the two portable buildings at the front of the school to and area near the Navarre Drive entrance. This will then provide a new location for the Uniform Shop.
Coaches Boxes
As part of our continual school improvement, we are also installing two coaches’ boxes on the Pat Grant Football Oval. While this may not be as impressive as the Arts Precinct structure it will provide some welcome shelter and protection on those cold and wet winter days when the interchange has a bench to warm! However, perhaps the most impressive thing about this structure is the work that our VET Building & Construction students have undertaken on this project. Under the guidance of Mr. Adam Bonnici, the students have done a terrific job and should complete the first box by next week. The second box will be built next year by the new team. This project provides really valuable hands on and relevant training and has the added benefit of making good economic savings for the College.
