WHY I BECAME A TEACHER
My Dad sat me down in Year 12 one weekend and said that I couldn’t leave the house unless I chose a course from the UAC guide. I loved my sport and played all the time. I also enjoyed being in and around schools as I had done it all my life as Dad was a Teacher. Therefore, it made sense to get paid for something I enjoy doing. This simplified approach has deepened over the years as I realised that teaching for me is a passion, regardless of the subject area.
FAVOURITE TEACHING SUCCESSES
I cannot name a single achievement. I measure my success through my ability to make learning fun. If my students leave my lesson with a smile on their face and new understanding in their brains, I am successful.
WHY I LOVE TEACHING AT BCS
What’s not to love? Firstly it’s the kids, what a fantastic bunch of almost grown humans. They are quintessential country students – friendly, easy going, love their sport and focused on their education (most of the time). Secondly it’s the staff. When I first arrived everybody was so welcoming and supportive. I was in awe of the ‘can do’ attitude when it came to doing what it takes to ensure the students have the best opportunities. This attitude among the staff has only increased further in my time and I can’t see it changing anytime soon. Lastly it’s the community – When my family and I arrived in Boorowa we felt as though we were coming home. We had never experienced this before in our movements and it was a weird feeling that we found somewhere we felt as though we belonged. We have purchased a house and hope to stay for years to come.
SOMETHING YOU DO NOT KNOW ABOUT ME
I have a genetic syndrome that makes me highly prone to dislocations. As a result I have had over 20 shoulder dislocations, 5 knee dislocations and 3 knee surgeries. This is why, even though I love my sport, you may not see me playing in town competitions. That and my dodgy back (but that’s another story)…
