Primary Learning

Year 3/4

Maths

Year 3/4 have been working hard this term in Maths, learning about mass, volume and capacity. We have been enjoying the warmer weather, taking our learning outside for the volume component of this unit. Students have been exploring different units of measurement by estimating, measuring liquids, weighing and comparing objects and recording their findings. In Maths students have also been learning about ‘time’, building their own clocks and using these to complete other tasks in class.

English (writing)

Year 3/4 have enjoyed reading Menena Cottin's 'Black Book of Colours'. This book describes how a person with a vision impairment experiences colours. Students have used descriptive language to describe colours and have created their own 'Black Book of Colours'. This book is now on display in our classroom. Two examples of of students are below.

‘Yellow’

Yellow is as bright as the sun and as fresh as a daisy.

Yellow is as sour as a lemon.

Yellow is as crunchy as corn.

Yellow is as soft as a baby duck’s feather.

Yellow is as sharp as a pencil,

 ready to colour my picture.

'Green'

Green is as ticklish as the grass when you lay on it.

Green is as bitter as a green apple.

Green is as big as a green-leaved tree.

Green is as much as a 100 dollar note.

Green is as much trouble as a green card.

Green is as strong as the hulk.

Green is as colourful as a new bought texta.

Green is as dangerous as a green tree python.

Green is as disgusting as something that comes out of your mouth when you’re sick.

Green is as scary as a zombie.

Green is as mighty as the NRL Raiders.

FRED HOLLOWS HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Our school was alerted to a fantastic award by the Fred Hollows Foundation this year:

We decided to nominate Tamsyn Ritchie for this award as she has gone above and beyond throughout the year to contribute to the local community. Tamsyn has been collecting bottle top lids across the whole community for the past few months (currently around the 2500 lids mark). These are then donated to a company that uses the plastic to create prosthetic body parts for people in need. This is just one small example of why Tamsyn was nominated and ultimately won this award. Tamsyn will travel with her family to the University of Technology Sydney on 16th October to attend an official Fred Hollows ceremony and be presented with the award. Congratulations Tamsyn and thank-you for your contributions to our school and community as a whole.

Year 5/6 Class

Well...it's becoming a cliche to say that we've had a whirlwind fortnight...but that has definitely been the case! We had a very strong focus on creative arts for SMART & Drama night, transition to year 6 days, TUFF blokes night (y6 boys), NAIDOC trip to Yass, Western Athletics...and have squeezed in some time for english, maths, science, computing, history, philosophy - and even a film!

English

We have begun a new unit of work in English on a short film called 'REPLAY'. This film is an animation based in a post-apocalyptic world, where the characters cannot go outside without oxygen masks, and it is a dangerous place to be in. We are writing descriptions of the settings and characters for this piece based on a narrative text. What is special about this is that the characters only speak in French language, so it is up to us to decide what they are saying through body language and tone of voice. Very tricky but the class are doing very well. Don't spoil the ending!

Maths

In maths we have moved onto 3D space and measurement. We have created 3D objects and measured their volume - solved problems involving 3D space, and even begun measuring compound 3D shapes. We have all tried our best to remember the formula (Volume = Length X Width X Height)  as this is the key to solving volume problems. We have also begun converting units of measurement in the metric system and even investigated the very odd Imperial system that the USA use, even the teachers don't know how it works!

Creative Arts

We had SMART & Drama night last Wednesday and wow, was it a big event! Our class did a fantastic play about escaping the 'prison' of primary school and getting to high school. It turns out our Year 5 students were sentenced to one more year of primary school while the year 6 class got sent up to high school. All the students did fantastically in their acting, dancing, singing and playing instruments. The staff were so proud of them and hope they continue their creative arts in the future.

Geography

The class has been set a geography assignment to complete at home by Mrs Hoy. The assignment is not time intensive and the resources are provided to the students. Any encouragement for students to complete this from parents would be greatly appreciated.

Infants Learning

Year 2/3 have had a fantastic time during term 3, we celebrated NAIDOC week by creating our own flag with our painted hands and discussing what Voice, Treaty, Truth means. We also had the chance to join in the NAIDOC celebrations at Yass last week.

During our Literacy groups we have been working hard to improve our reading, comprehension, writing and spelling skills.

In Maths we have been delving deeper into how multiplication works, looking at patterns and rules that will help us to understand this concept.

We thoroughly enjoyed performing our skit and dance for everyone at Smart night, we loved dressing up as our characters and had lots of fun getting it all ready to perform for our fabulous audience.

We have enjoyed creating a variety of Art works this term, using various pictures, Artists and ideas for inspiration. Our classroom is looking so bright and fun with all of our lovely work on display.

NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS

On Thursday K-6 went to Yass for a Naidoc Day celebration of Voice, Treaty, Truth. After arriving at O'Connor Park, we got to experience a welcoming ceremony and join in with some indigenous dances. Then our Yellow shirts were put to great effect to represent the sun as part of an aboriginal flag of students for a drone photo.

K-6 then enjoyed a range of activities from practicing sports such as tennis, netball and football, adding our handprints to a community wall, participating in indigenous art projects such as chalk art and boomerang decorating, throwing and even chances to talk to local elders.

Overall a wonderful day full of learning more about our community and the local indigenous communities.
