Teaching and Learning

To begin, begin. William Wordsworth

Our vision for teaching and learning in the 21st Century is informed by our focus to seek the best for and from every student. It is underpinned by The College values of respect, gratitude, compassion, resilience, and optimism and our firm commitment to improve outcomes for all students, in their levels of achievement and wellbeing.

Over the last few months, the Teaching and Learning Executive has launched the new Curriculum for 2021 at The Hamilton and Alexandra College. We are excited to begin a new chapter in teaching and learning at The College, as we bring together the diverse needs of our students as they prepare to be lifelong learners.

Our learning program is informed by the Victorian Curriculum and is designed to ensure that each student has strong foundations in English, Mathematics and Science, whilst extending skills in Humanities, the Arts, Technology, LOTE, Health and PE. The curriculum model offers breadth and depth, it allows students to consolidate and extend and have choice and agency over their learning program. Michal Fullan’s Deep Learning (2017) has informed our choice to design a curriculum that builds global competencies and focuses on: Character, Citizenship, Communication, Critical thinking, Collaboration, Creativity. As the Global pandemic and RLP 1.0 and 2.0 have shown us, students will be required to be agile and adaptable in their learning of both knowledge and skills.

Our Middle Years program incorporates-positive education and emphasises the importance of character development and wellbeing. The Senior Years offers students the opportunity to have a far more individual learning program, supporting their specific goals.

Students have three entry points for learning:

  • Engage Program (Transition) Year 7
  • Explore Program (Breadth) Year 8-9
  • Emerge Program (Depth) Year 10-12

The Hamilton and Alexandra College Learner is independent, someone who works collaboratively with others, reflects on their own learning and capacity for progress and is proactive about establishing routines for learning.

We want our students to become confident citizens of what appears to be an uncertain future. The architecture of our learning at College supports our students as they enter a new world, with new skills, aspirations and connected to all of life.

Our learning ecosystem that is, Engage, Explore and Emerge, offers students a robust curriculum on which to launch their future in the world of work and further study. We invite you to partner with us as your son or daughter begins the next chapter of their lifelong learning journey.
