Activities for the break

Holidays are around the corner and spring is here! We understand the amount of effort all families have put towards this online learning and for sure holidays couldn't come soon enough.

Here are some ideas/activities to do during the holidays:

Geocaching: Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world. More info and link to website here.

Jigsaw: Merri Creek Management Committee have free digital jigsaw puzzles of local flora and fauna of the creek, including frogs, birds and fungi. This is a screen based activity but could be explored in nature! More info and link to website here.

Fairy garden: Create your own Fairy garden using a flat planter box and grass clippings, flowers, pebbles or whatever else you cand find around the garden and make a fairy oasis, then lets hope they would pay it a visit. An example of a Fairy Garden can be found here

Clean the creek: Perhaps this is a great way to be in nature while showing care and responsibility. Simply get a bag, a pair of gloves and some water and hit your local green area to do some cleaning! The Age article: Locals pick up litter during lockdown.

Luna (dog) asked how to take the metal thing off the Creek on our last "Clean the Creek" adventure.

Recycling boxes at NPS

This is more a project for T4 but we are ready. We have set up a box to collect bread tags at Newlands. Our goal is high but we love a challenge! So remember if you have any bread tags at home, save them and bring them to Newlands on your next visit.

We certainly don't want to stop here and are starting to plan a recycling station/area at Newlands. This is early stages and we are just on the process of planning and designing so we are on the hunt of an avid wood worker (good worker too) that is keen to create something similar to the boxes presented on the pictures bellow.

The Sustainability captains will help assemble/decorate the box, label it and create a campaign to raise awareness and explain the items that we will be collecting.

This is a project for T4 this year, so if you are able to spare your skills, time and knowledge in creating a box similar to the ones bellow, please contact the school via email with the subject Recycling boxes project - Att Jose.
