Co-curricular - Junior Sport

Last Friday saw the College celebrate Founder’s Day. It was a wonderful day with the College at large joining as one to celebrate Mass. Congratulations to Ms Daley and her team for making the celebration of the Eucharist feel so intimate, while being so spread out. It was a fitting start to a day all about togetherness.

Throughout the remainder of the day, the boys showcased their talents in all manner of fields. Music, song, and dance were strong themes through the concert and really highlighted the variety of talents that are present here at the College. The day culminated in the 24th running of the Waterford Mile. This is a handicap running race that incorporates students right through from Years 5 to 12. The race always promises excitement and intrigue and this year was no different.

The race was split wide open this year with race favourite, Jonathan Meaker of Year 10, out with an injured foot. We wish him all a speedy recovery and a quick return to running. So, there was much debate about who could take out the prize. There were strong rumours that a Junior School student may be a surprise winner this year. The Junior School runners were strong, led by Joe Doran (off 15 seconds), Christian Caristo and Elijah Saade (off 10 seconds) of Year 6, supported by Davian Vranges (off 5 seconds) and Elio Alessi (off scratch) in Year 5.

The Junior School runners were strong starters, but it was Davian who set the early pace and took out the lead. Joe Doran quickly ran through the pack and joined Davian for the first 2 laps of Breen Oval. From there Joe surged forward and took a commanding lead into the third lap. Contenders were sure to challenge and challenge they did. The myriad runners of the Senior School soon swamped the field and quickly had Joe in their sights. Joe kept his pace and focus and powered on, laying down the challenge to the Senior boys. With one lap to go Joe was still in the lead, with Seamus Meaker looking to cause an upset and attempt to pass Joe in the final stages. Joe, rising to the call of the crowd, lifted his rate and broke Seamus in the final bend with Joe flashing home to win the Waterford Mile by a healthy ten metres.

This was an outstanding feat by Joe. It is the first time since 2008 that a Junior School student has won the Waterford Mile and only the second time in its history. Huge congratulations go to Joe on this outstanding effort and to all the runners who participated this year. In what is a roller coaster of a year, it is great to see the boys, particularly the Junior School boys, take hold of the opportunities afforded them and do themselves and the College proud.
