NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK
Every year in Term 3 we celebrate National Science Week. The theme for 2020 was ‘Deep Blue: Innovations for the Future of our Oceans’—a topic chosen to raise awareness of the environment, and the economic and social importance of our oceans and waterways. A variety of activities took place over the week, including an Engineering challenge, photography competition, Tutor Group Quiz and virtual escape room.
Students were given the opportunity to showcase their artistic skills in the Photography Competition. There were many very high-quality entries, and all students are congratulated on their work. The winner for Years 7–9 was Ruthie Ong (Year 8) with the honourable mention going to William Thorne (Year 7), while Madhav Rajesh (Year 11) was the winner of the Years 10–12 category and Jeremy Ash (Year 12) picked up an honourable mention. The winning photos can be viewed below.
Several students participated in the Engineering challenge where they had to build a free-standing tower out of 20 spaghetti sticks, a metre of rope and a tiny piece of Blu Tack. Congratulations to Sashana Burling, Katalina Savanyo and Toby Wilson (Year 8) who won the Years 7–9 category, and to Silas Butler (Year 11) and Luke Lambert (Year 12) who won the Years 10–12 category. To round out the week, Tutor Groups participated in a quiz, with the questions based on this year’s theme. The winners were from Stirling House and were well led by their Tutor Mr Cameron Harries—well done!
Many students were given the opportunity to complete an escape room challenge, facilitated by the online resource Stile. This engaging activity saw students working in small groups to solve problems and crack codes. It was great to see students use a variety of skills to progress through the levels, and they all enjoyed this approach to learning.
To cap off the week, the Year 3 classes visited our Senior School labs. They have been learning about heat as a form of energy and the types of heat transfer. Science teachers Mr Jim Shackleton, Ms Angela Schoen and Miss Stacey Fairhead conducted live demonstrations and hands-on activities for the students, and it was great to have the younger students involved with Science in the Senior School. Thank you to the teachers for their hard work in bringing this together, and to Laboratory Technician Mrs Faye Beechen for getting all the materials together.
Until next year; happy science-ing!
