Art Exhibition in Centre for Performing Arts

A range of Senior School and Junior School artworks is on display in the Centre for Performing Arts until Week 7, Term 3.

The Junior School artworks include:

  • Pre-Primary: ‘My Walk’ – captures long winding pathways, steep hills and bumpy tracks (ink and fine marker pen); Painting with Scissors – taking inspiration from French artist Henri Matisse, students produced paper cut-outs exploring natural shapes (heliograph prints on fabric, watercolours).
  • Year 2: Contour Shapes – explores line, shape and pattern. Simple geometric shapes form intricate puzzle pieces in coloured card.
  • Years 3, 4 and 5: Organic Forms – depict optical illusions on paper exploring the impact between colours and three-dimensional forms (fine permanent pen, coloured felt markers).
  • Year 4: Cityscapes – students were inspired by Cubist-style architecture and bright colour schemes after exploring the artwork ‘Castle and Sun’ (tulle fabric, pastel chalk pencils on black paper).

SCIENCE WEEK IN YEAR 1B FOCUSES ON ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Year 1B were led by students’ interests to inquire about animals and rocks curious to find out about animal habitats and mining. The two Inquiries are now beginning to merge as students’ interests shift towards what can make animals extinct and endangered. Year 1B have been looking closely at the reasons why trees are cut down and habitats changed.

On Wednesday, 26 August, College parent Mrs Anika Wall visited our class to tell us about her job as an Environmental Scientist and her role in managing environmental impact during the mining process. She talked with students about the Jarrah Forest and the different ways in which it is used including for timber, conservation, water, recreation and mining. We focused on Bauxite and the process of it being turned into Alumina and then Aluminium, and the planning needed for the closure of a mine. Students found out how Environmental Scientists can protect animals living in the Jarrah Forest by protecting their habitats, how the area is re-forested and the area restored.

Students used aluminium in painting trees and to make 3D models of trees. They also used clay, gumnuts, bark pieces and wood pieces to create models of habitats, including hollow logs and trees where black cockatoos and numbats like to shelter. They researched information about animals whose habitats are in the Jarrah Forest and why they are in danger of extinction.
