Science Week

Science Week

Last week, Staughton College celebrated National Science Week!

I was involved in many activities over the week. On the first day, I helped plant beans and carrots in the Edible Garden, and later on in the week, Ms. Hellyer organised signs for each of the vegetable planters that students will be painting and putting up. I was also involved in planting succulent cuttings in disused plastic bottles and creating flower garlands out of grocery bags. These will be used to decorate the Edible Garden in the theme “Alice in Wonderland” and help teach students how to reduce plastic rubbish in creative ways.

We also had a QR Code Scavenger Hunt where we needed to hunt the QR codes out in the yard and scan them using a reader app on our phones. We would then have a science question come up on our phones that we had to answer correctly.

There were also many collectible Element Cards that were hidden around the school every night. Any student who found the rare elements and could complete their set, won a prize. No one could beat my brother, Samuel Strawbridge, and his friends Joshua Watson and Ben McIntosh, who won both the QR Code Scavenger Hunt and the Element Card collection!

Many students and teachers were involved with Science Week. It was great to see students leading activities and getting excited about science. I wanted to try all of the activities but didn’t have enough time! There were Dissections in the Yard, Explosions on the Oval, and building solar panel phone chargers that I would also like to see next year.
