Program Highlights

Exploring Early 20th Century Melbourne

As part of our studies of the book Runner, by Robert Newton, Year 8 students went on a walking tour through parts of Melbourne, with 8C and 8D doing this on Tuesday, 3 May, and 8A and 8B going the next day.

We started on the steps of Parliament House and then began exploring the laneways that were once home to some of Melbourne’s poorest and most dangerous people. We traced the route of the dramatic race scene in the book, and visited other key sites mentioned in the book before our trip finished in Swanston Street. We learnt a lot about early 20th century Melbourne and we gained a better understanding of life during 1919 in the environment of the novel.

We are all grateful for this amazing experience, and the opportunity to discover more about Melbourne in the time the novel was set.

Kilvington CD - Music for Relaxation and Hope

As a result of a collaboration between Mrs Kathleen Vergers’ Year 10 Ethics in Leadership class, various senior music students under the guidance of Mr Sasha Stella, and art students under the guidance of Ms Rosie Busuttil, a CD has been produced to showcase Kilvington’s music talent and raise money for local charity, Matt’s Place.

The musical selections represent great diversity: from the Chinese traditional sounds of the guzheng (Elizabeth Hu, Y12) to classical voice and piano, to a contemporary original composed by Summer Gourlie, Y10.

Music for Relaxation and Hope makes a positive musical, cultural and ethical statement. Available for purchase at Senior School Reception for $10.00. You can listen to a sample here.

Mustard Update - The Great Debate

Mustard Group welcomes anyone interested in exploring Christianity, religion or even life. Our student attendees have a diverse range of world views, some having various faith backgrounds as well as several non-religious students.

Recently, our Mustard leader, Stephanie Gotze, facilitated a student ‘Great Debate’.  Students chose the topic of ‘Creationism and science/evolution can coexist comfortably in modern society’ to tease apart. It was impressive to see the quality of sophisticated points that were communicated by both the negative and affirmative team.

Students from Years 7-12 who would like to come and try out Mustard can come during lunchtime on Wednesdays and/or  Fridays in PVC9 (drama room).

In April we were presented with the opportunity to attend an event hosted by the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and the Melbourne Press Club with Mr Charlton. Along with a lovely meal, we were honoured to listen to Treasurer Tim Pallas present the 2016 Victorian State Budget. He briefed us on the Government's plan for industry and employment, and we were able to gain key insight into the next financial year. We were delighted to be invited to an event of such importance and we would strongly encourage other students, when given the chance, to make the most of it as it was an incredible learning experience.

Ainger Public Speaking Competition

Year 11 students, George Crossingham and Alex Hyde, competed in the Ainger Award, an effective speaking competition. Both boys presented passionate and emotive speeches about issues important to them.

Congratulations to George for being awarded the Encouragement Award, and being praised for his ability to paint word pictures for his audience.

VCE Tutoring Program

We are very happy to welcome back 2015 School Dux, Eleanor Cook and School Co- Vice Captain of 2013, Hannah Vass, to be part of Kilvington’s new Year 12 tutoring program.

Eleanor, who is studying Science at Melbourne University, is providing assistance on Thursday afternoons in Chemistry and Mathematical Methods. Hannah, who is in her third year of Dietetics at Monash University, is running small group sessions to help students in English on Monday afternoons.

Having recently completed their VCE, Eleanor and Hannah are very familiar with the requirements of each subject and I am sure they will be able to offer many tips to our current students on achieving success in their VCE.  As the year progresses, we hope to have more past students on board to assist with other Year 12 subjects.  Students will be notified by their teachers as tutoring in additional subjects become available throughout the year.

Students interested in attending tutoring sessions should speak with their class teacher or myself.  We are sure that our Year 12 students will find the extra support offered through this program most valuable.
