Learning isn't just for School

Welcome back to another term of learning. Last term through our reports, data slideshows and conferences we were able to share with our parents the amazing learning student have engaged in over the first half of the school year. From this teachers have set goals with their students to help them to continue to learn and grow their Maths and Literacy skills. An important part of learning is to practice the skills that are taught at school and engage in learning at home that will strengthen understanding and support students to embed their learning.

At St Joseph’s we have a clear Home Learning Policy that was designed to support students, parents and teachers to know the expectations for learning when at home. The minimum expectations outlined in this policy are below:

Junior  Community  (Foundation - Year 2)

-    Reading/Tricky Words recognition each night.

-    Practise Number fluency games weekly.

Middle Community (Year 3 & 4)

-    Reading and Vocabulary Building each night.

-    Weekly practise of Number fluency skills, including some multiplication facts.

Senior Community (Year 5 & 6)

-    Reading and Vocabulary Building each night.

-    Weekly practise of Number fluency skills, including all multiplication facts.

-    On a needs basis consolidating other curriculum areas.

As part of this process, these home learning expectations are monitored by each teacher and students are expected to engage in these activities weekly. Each class has designed its own way to track home learning and follow up for students who do not complete this each week. To support the students at different levels and focus on learning needs, teachers use a combination of paper and online resources.

On our Home Learning Portal, each week teachers add new information regarding what's happening in the classroom and activities to support learning at home. We encourage all parents and students to access this weekly to help them to continue to grow as learners and embed their skills.
