Term 3, Week 2

Grade 1 and 2 Reminders:

  • Welcome back for the second semester of 2022! We are very proud of the way our students have returned to the classroom and settled back into class routines.
  • Thank you to the parents who have been able to join our reading helpers roster, we have loved being able to welcome helpers back into our classrooms! Please remember to sign in at the office when you arrive. With regards to masks, the advice from DET which we have been asked to communicate with parents is that mask wearing indoors is strongly recommended - thank you in advance for your cooperation with this recommendation.

What we have been up to...

We returned to school last week to celebrate NAIDOC Week with the theme 'Get up, Stand up, Show up'. Students participated in a number of activities in class including listening to stories, creating artworks and the performance of 'Taba Naba' at our NAIDOC Week assembly on Wednesday afternoon.

We have also been learning about procedural writing and the measurement of length in class. Students followed a procedure to create pirate hats and enjoyed measuring and comparing things using informal units.

Upcoming Fortnight:

Term 3  - Week 3 and 4

Literacy:  Over the next fortnight during reading we will be practising the strategies 'Recognise cause and effect' and 'Chunk the letters and sounds together', students are encouraged to be practising these in their own reading. During Sound Waves students will be learning about the sounds 'th' as in 'this feather, that feather' and 's' as in 'measure the treasure'. We will continue to learn about procedural writing and students will write their own procedures.

Mathematics: Our focus during Maths lessons will be learning about and using mental and written strategies to solve subtraction problems. We will also look at measuring and comparing capacity.

Topic: During our Topics unit of ‘Celebrating Differences’, your child will be exploring social justice through the lens of ‘Celebrating Multiculturalism’.

We will focus on the countries of Italy, China, India and Nigeria as they represent multicultural Australia. If you have other cultures that we could explore, we will be having a ‘Show and Tell’ in Week 9 for students to bring in items from home to present to the class.

The focus of this unit is to encourage our students to value differences in people and to treat everyone fairly.
