Science and Technology Challenge

On Monday, a squad of 19 boys woke at the crack of dawn and fumbled their way through blurry eyes and grey morning skies to catch a bus to distant Launceston, the location of the state final of the University of Newcastle’s Science and Engineering Challenge.

The boys had won their way through to the final, and were for the most part ready to battle it out against students from Kingston High School, Calvin Christian School, Mount Carmel College and Launceston Christian School in a re-hash of the challenges they had encountered a mere ten days earlier.

Teams were formed, challenges assigned, and the boys slugged it out, trying to find the best solutions to the various problems posed throughout the day.

As the day came to a close, the team had managed a couple of minor victories on various challenges, including the morning rotation “Return to Mars” activity and an equal first on the afternoon session of the “Helter Skelter Shelter” activity, rumoured to be the most difficult of the challenges.

When the final scores were announced, Launceston Christian School came out on top with a very impressive 1484.06 points out of a possible 1600. The SVC team managed a commendable 1123.62 points, which left them in 5th place, overall.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the boys involved to represent the school in practical application of academic concepts. Those who attended presented an excellent example of the values we extoll at SVC, and should be commended on their presentation, attitude and efforts.

A huge thank you to Mr David Sanderson and Mr Gary Topham, who gave up a huge amount of their day to supervise and support the troops.

We look forward to next year’s challenge where we can hopefully go a step or two further towards the title of State Champions! Regardless, 5th place is an impressive accomplishment!

The team who attended were:
