ELEARNING AT ST MARY'S

The Empathy Initiative Workshop

Our Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 students will be participating in a Digital Empathy Workshop with Jeremy Kalbstein who started The Empathy Initiative which “aims to develop empathy in students, to inspire them to take action and transform themselves from bystanders to ‘upstanders’ in bullying and cyberbullying situations, and to be mindful of how they use technology.”

Students will take part in a four hour workshop to;

  • Identify the impact of ICT overuse on their learning.
  • Explain the link between ICT and emotions.
  • Identify strategies used by ICT to engage users.
  • Describe strategies to identify and manage their digital behaviours.
  • Explain the impact of ICT on themselves.
  • Recognise when to seek help and from where.

Keep an eye out for the next newsletter as our ICT Leaders Paul and William intend to share the best parts of the workshop.

SPORTS NEWS

Cross Country

Wally and Leo represented the Holt District at the Beachside Division Cross Country race on Friday the 3rd of June. Here is Wally’s report.

“It was a cold day and the course at Bald Hill Park was in good condition. When I arrived their were lots of runners from each district warming up for their race. Watching the two races before mine helped me calm some of my nerves! I didn’t start well and found myself at the back of the pack. I weaved through the other competitors and found my way to the leading pack by about the half way mark. I was feeling comfortable and had found a rhythm I was happy with. The pace increased a bit more and I felt that others were picking up a bit of speed. Everyone held their positions until the final 100 metres when most of us gave one final push to finish line. I finished in 16th place and felt happy with my run. “ Leo was also happy with his run. He found that the pace was much quicker than at the Holt District event. Leo finished 24th in the 11 year old boys section. We are very proud of both of these students and thank them for representing St. Mary’s and the Holt District in the Cross Country.

Inter School Netball

Our first away game for this season was against St Joseph’s Black Rock on Friday 3rd of June. They had two teams who rotated on and off with our three teams. Their goalers were on fire, enjoying a Home court advantage and cheer squad! We all tried our best and felt as though we have improved since our first week of Interschool netball. We are getting better at knowing our positions and working as a team.

Unfortunately, the Lightning Premiership was cancelled due to the weather and dangerous conditions but we are excited about the rescheduled date and pray for good weather on Thursday the 16th June!

We would also like to thank Charmaine (Amelia’s mum, 5S) for her coaching tips and support each week.

Inter School AFL

The footballers played against St Joseph’s Black Rock. Due to the muddy conditions we set out the playing area using only half of the normal sized oval. We had our full team but unfortunately St Joseph’s only had 12 healthy players so we had to rotate off the bench. Coach Kat did an amazing job making sure everyone had equal playing time!  It was a close game until St Joseph’s scored a couple of quick goals before the siren. The smaller ground did not suit our style of game, but we had fun anyway!

Thanks to Con (Jack’s Dad) for providing some juicy oranges for us to enjoy at half time!  We are now looking forward to playing the Holt District Lightning Premiership today (9/6)!
