Maths Olympiad and Maths Games

Our amazing St Joey's Maths Team have just completed their 3rd Olympiad and Games competition! There have been some amazing results so far with a few of our students receiving a 5 out of 5!

We have an outstanding number of participants this year - 10 Olympiad students and 25 Games students. This is a huge effort and I am so proud of these students who put their hand up for an extra challenge!

There are two more competitions this year - the 27th of July and the 7th of September.

I wish all of our students who are participating the best of luck!

Here is a question from the third Olympiad test:

"Calvin has a book with 120 pages. The page numbers are only printed on odd-numbered pages. What is the sum of the numbers on these odd-numbered pages?"

Let me know if you think you have the answer! House points will be awarded!

What's happening in Middle and Senior Maths?

The Middles are currently working on Addition and Subtraction strategies. These include jump strategy, compensation, split and near doubles. They have been using dice and cards to generate numbers, using empty number lines and have really enjoyed playing different dice games including “3’s”.

Here’s what the Middles have to say:

Josh T - I like learning about new things and really like subtraction. I have liked learning some new strategies for subtraction, especially the jump strategy.

Charlie J - I really like doing times tables and decimals because it challenges me and it’s fun to accomplish challenging work.

Havana H - I really like doing the jump strategy and also the PAT-M test! I don’t really like division or multiplication though!

The Seniors are still working on their Math Pathways goals, and most are working on modules that include decimals and fractions. They have been doing lots of math activities and games including 99 or bust, and the multiplication speed tests.

Here’s what the Seniors have to say:

Phuong P - I enjoy doing math pathways and I am currently working on converting metric units.

JT - I really like BODMAS and the speed tests. I also enjoy the diagnostics from pathways. I am currently working on multiplying fractions and whole numbers.

Lillyanne - I also like pathways and the speed tests for a warm-up. I am working on decimals and fractions at the moment which is challenging but good!
