Around the Classrooms

Foundation

As we wrap up the final few weeks of term 2, we would like to congratulate students on the amazing growth they have made this semester. Engagement and effort have been terrific in the classroom, with students always willing to try their best and challenge themselves. There has been plenty to celebrate in both Literacy and Numeracy this week. Students have been using their knowledge of sounds to read short texts. They have also been building sentences that focus on including who they can see in a picture prompt and what they are doing. Some samples have been included in this week’s pictures. In Numeracy, students have been exploring the number 10. This has supported them in being able to read and make numbers from 20-100! Students are exploring how bundles of popsicle sticks, towers of 10 and an abacus can help them to count larger numbers.

Without doubt, the highlight of last week was our Buddy Reading with Grade 3/4 students. The students loved listening to the narrative stories being shared and were able to read a book to a grade 3 or 4 student. It was great to see all students enjoy the experience and our Senior Students were very supportive towards our wonderful Foundation Students.

Thank you to all our families for another great term! We hope you have a safe and enjoyable time during the school holidays and we look forward to an exciting term 3.

Year 1 and 2

This term students have been learning about dance aerobics, and how moving to music can help them stay fit and active. This week they begun creating their own aerobic routines in small groups. They have attempted to include a range of whole-body movements, warm-ups and cool downs. Students were also lucky enough to have Narelle from AFL Victoria, and Darcy from the Geelong Cats visit us to run some football clinics this term. Students loved getting involved in the games and skills practise!

We have been learning all about Japan in Content Knowledge over the past few weeks. Students have loved collecting new facts and interesting information about Japan to use in their writing. They have been focussing on writing complex sentences by using conjunctions to add more details! Attempting to unscramble sentences has been a challenging way to check for understanding of sentence structure and content knowledge.

Year 3 and 4

Over the last few weeks, students in Grade 3/4 have worked hard to plan, draft, edit and publish their own narratives in Text Construction! These adventure stories were based on one of the texts we read this term - Treasure Island! On Wednesday, students had the chance to share their stories with a super engaged audience... the Foundation students! Grade 3/4s loved sharing their work and the Foundies enjoyed listening along to some crazy adventures. We look forward to returning over to the Foundation students to share some more work in Term 3.

Year 5 and 6

We have had a very busy last few weeks in the 4/5/6 classrooms. We would firstly like to congratulate students and acknowledge the incredible effort all students put into completing various assessments over the last few weeks. Students tackled these assessments with an outstanding positive attitude and showed diligence and determination when completing these.

In Content Knowledge, the students have been learning about the Age of Exploration. Through this topic, students have been practising reading fluently in terms of phrasing, expression and pace. They have also been practising monitoring their reading to maintain accuracy.

In Text Construction, students have been thinking critically about the sentences they write and have been working to up-level simple sentences to complex sentences by adding details using the question prompts of who, what, when, where and why. Students have also been up-levelling their sentences by including appositives. In Math, students have been learning about volume and capacity. Students have learned about what each is and how to differentiate between the two. Students have measured objects in their classroom environment and used these measurements to find the volume of these objects.

Call out for Science

If you have any spare empty (and clean) 1L and 2L plastic soft drink containers over the next three weeks, could you please bring them to the Science Room on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The Senior Students will be needing some plastic bottles to conduct an experiment in the last week of term.

Thank you!
