From the Principal
How wonderful was it hearing the news of one of our student leaders, Cheyenne Scates, receiving her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. I also hear that she has already started on her gold. We are very proud of Cheyenne and all of our students who are undertaking this wonderful program which has service to others at its heart.
For those of us not overly familiar with this award, participants:
- Are equipped and empowered to achieve their personal best
- Learn to take responsibility for their goals and choices
- Become connected to and actively engaged within their immediate community
- Make a real difference to society through their positive contributions and involvement
- Learn to persevere and overcome barriers to success
- Learn important life skills
- Increase their career opportunities.
Having taught Cheyenne and seen her work with others in her various service activities around the College, I know she certainly embodies all these aspects.
Those families who have undertaken an enrolment tour of the College will know that I often use the phrase ‘What makes a Lakeside College kid is that they care more about the person sitting in class next to them than they do for themselves'. This is what we strive to see in our students.
In a world where it often seems like simple courtesy, polite and respectful speech, care and concern for strangers as well as family and friends is rare, Lakeside College strives to support our students to embody the character of Christ who was the ultimate servant.
Our Bible reading for the week at the College is the story of Jesus and the miraculous catch of fish. In John 21:1-19 we hear of Jesus appearing to his disciples after his death and resurrection. The disciples had gone back to their work as fishermen as Jesus, the man they had followed and served for 3 years, appeared to have left them. Suddenly while they were fishing, Jesus appears with them and invites them to eat a breakfast he has prepared for them.
Even though among the fisherman were those who doubted Jesus and those who abandoned him, Jesus fed them and gave his love to them . As Christians, this is our example of service.
As our students and staff serve in our community, may this example inspire us all.
Blessings
Tom
