Performing Arts

Term 3 is shaping up to be incredibly busy for Mazenod’s performing arts students!

Week one saw the return of the Mazenod/Avila musical, with the very successful production of “Shrek.” Our performers on stage were superb, and justifiably received an enthusiastic reception from all attendees. Mention too, must be made of student musicians who performed in the pit and those who assisted as part of the backstage crew. The commitment shown by students was first class. Many had never had the opportunity to be part of a performance of such magnitude or difficulty. These young men put in hard work and deserve to feel very proud of their accomplishments.

The show would not be possible without the voluntary contribution of many of our wonderful staff members (too many to thank individually). All go above and beyond to ensure that the Mazenod/Avila production ran smoothly – our students are blessed to have such caring and knowledgeable teachers working alongside them.

After two years without a musical, perhaps the greatest gift was the warmth of spirit and the collegiality amongst staff, students and the wider Mazenod community. The performing arts build character and uplift. Sincere thank you to all who did their part to make “Shrek” such a success.

Term 3 also sees the return of the ACCent on Music combined schools’ concert at Hamer Hall. This is a chance for many of our musicians to perform in one of Australia’s premier concert halls with peers from all the ACC schools. Rehearsals will be undertaken throughout Term 3, with the concert being held on the evening of Tuesday 13th September.

Another important event taking place in Term 3 is the Victorian School’s Music Festival, held at the beautiful Hawthorn Arts Centre. This festival gives students a chance to perform 3 major works and receive feedback from a high-profile adjudicator. They also take part in workshops targeted at improving their ensemble musicianship. Mazenod ensembles taking part are the Mears Wind Band, Founders’ Ensemble, Stage Band and Swing Band.

Finally, our musicians are currently working tirelessly toward the annual Mazenod College Gala, to be held on Tuesday 6th September in the Provence Centre. This is our major concert event of the year, showcasing all our instrumental and vocal ensembles. Always a grand evening, enjoyed by the musicians and audience members alike, we encourage all parents and family members to come along to this free event and be entertained by our terrific young musicians.
