From the Head of Boarding

Kingfisher Fair

Thank you for the donations that have come in so far for the Kingfisher Fair chocolate wheel.  We appreciate your generosity.  A gentle reminder for others who would like to donate, the categories are:

  • Anchorage: gardening and hardware
  • Endeavour: giftware
  • Michaelmas: arts
  • Eclipse: sporting
  • Breaksea: gourmet/pampering

We would also love to hear from any Great Southern Grammar families who may have small bales of hay they can donate.  These will be used for seating outside on the day of the fair.

The Marsh Award

The Marsh Award has been created to recognise boarders who have gone out of their way to help others and the community around them.  With this its first year, we have outlined a vision of what a Grammar boarders should aspire to become.

This term we have seen our boarders participate in tree planting to improve the environment around Lake Seppings (a lake that was described by Charles Darwin when he travelled through this area many years ago).  We have seen more of our seniors stand before their peers to provide their insights during our chapel gatherings and we have seen boarders giving up their time to help with community events such as the Boarder’s Got Talent and the Kingfisher Fair.  It has been great to see examples of community mindedness such as these.

Head of Breaksea

As Mrs Angela Ferreira prepares for her final semester in boarding, we are in the process of recruiting a new Head of Breaksea House. Applications closed earlier this week and we have received interest from a number of interstate, regional and local applicants.  We are shortlisting and interviewing the applicants and hope to confirm an appointment in coming weeks.

Boarding's Got Talent

A big thanks to all the boarders who participated in the Boardings' Got Talent on Sunday night.  It was a highly entertaining event with great participation from all of the houses. Well done to the boys of Anchorage House who came together to thrill the judges and spectators with an interactive performance.

I appreciate the efforts of families to get their children back in time for a speedy rehearsal. The final acts don’t reflect the drama of the preparations that go into preparing for this event really and I know each Head of House has laughed and probably cried a little, in the making of this show. Thanks for your tireless efforts. Thank you also to the Gap Assistants who provided inspiration and guidance.  It’s events such as these that provide opportunities for our boarders to shine outside of the sporting and academic fields.  There’s also a lot of fun and a good dose of camaraderie that goes along with it.

Gap Assistants

GSG Gap Assistants often leave the school, having had the best experience of their lives.  We recently heard from Jule Schermann, who came to Breaksea House as a prospective medical student. Jule enjoyed her time here so much that she decided to change direction and enrol as a teacher in Germany.

This term, we welcomed three new Gap Assitants to GSG Boarding. Sam Tomlinson moves into Anchorage House from England; Lea Von Graberg into Michalemas House from Germany; and Ana Bermudez arrived in Endeavour House from Colombia. These outstanding young people have quickly settled into their roles and developed a strong rapport with the boarders in their house.  Welcome to you all!

I hope everyone has an enjoyable boarder’s long weekend.  All the best.
